Why do we love this wine?

This brand is truly an embodiment of the winemaker's journey from the Yarra to Oregon to Margaret River and back to the Yarra. Oh yeah, and the wine is an elegant and complex Yarra pinot noir that's an absolute joy to drink. This is soft, juicy, bright and light. It’s about delicacy and fragrance rather than brawn. It speaks of place, and you could do much worse than speak about Woori Yallock and the Willowlake Vineyard in Gladysdale. The wine may take a journey from vine to bottle too, but if its reception at Mofo HQ is anything to go by, once you’ve tasted them the last mile will be the quickest part of their travels. Straight into your glass, many times over.

Grown mostly on the Lone Star Creek Vineyard at Woori Yallock with help from the Willowlake Vineyard at Gladysdale. 20% whole bunches. It's a crisp, light, bell-clear pinot with pretty cranberry, red cherry and musk flavours topped off with spice and briar. Easy drinkability with just a touch extra.

Winemaker Damian North is a lovely gentleman with wines that speak of the Yarra Valley with great clarity. This is fruit from the upper Yarra, an unusual year climatically for grape growing and harvesting. Pretty perfume of red cherry, watermelon, rose water, briar and clove. The palate is a little dilute in flavour but has a rearguard of sweet fruit that finishes off each sip nicely. Soft, succulent texture, a little burr of dusty-savoury tannin, some dilution to flavour, gentle sweetness a motif. It’s very nice drinking. Delicious bistro style, let’s say.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Journey Wines Pinot Noir represents the elegant, terroir-driven style that Yarra Valley does so well. Rather than pursuing power and extraction, it showcases the delicate cherry and cranberry fruit with savoury complexity that speaks to its cool-climate origins. The light-bodied approach allows the vineyard's personality to shine through, making it perfect for those who appreciate finesse over force in their Pinot Noir.

The 2016 vintage in Yarra Valley was particularly favourable for Pinot Noir, producing wines with excellent balance and aromatic intensity. At this stage of maturity, the wine has developed beautiful secondary characters while retaining its bright fruit core. The vintage's natural acidity and moderate alcohol levels have allowed the wine to age gracefully, showing the complex interplay between primary fruit and emerging earthy, savoury notes.

The Five Red Star Halliday rating places Journey Wines among Australia's elite producers, recognising consistent excellence across their range. This prestigious rating from James Halliday indicates the winery's commitment to quality winemaking and their ability to express terroir authentically. For this Pinot Noir specifically, the 90-point score reflects its exceptional balance and regional typicity, marking it as a standout example of Yarra Valley Pinot Noir.

The winemaker's international experience, particularly in Oregon's Willamette Valley, brings invaluable perspective to Yarra Valley Pinot Noir production. Oregon and Yarra Valley share similar cool-climate conditions and both excel at elegant Pinot Noir styles. This cross-pollination of techniques and philosophy has clearly influenced the wine's refined approach, combining Old World restraint with New World fruit expression to create something uniquely expressive of place.

The wine's delicate structure and bright acidity make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that won't overwhelm its subtle complexity. Think roasted chicken with herbs, duck breast with cherry sauce, or mushroom risotto where the savoury elements will complement the wine's earthy undertones. The cherry and cranberry fruit also pairs beautifully with game birds or salmon, while the wine's elegance makes it suitable for cheese courses featuring soft, washed-rind varieties.
