Serious pinot drinkers know the good stuff can cellar for years and years. This stunner proves this theory in the most delicious way possible. Slippery and smooth and just starting to dip into tertiary territory, this will easily continue to go for many years to come. We're drinking now with fatty meats, this has the guts to handle it!

Why do we love this wine?

With a 40% new French oak profile, this wine was described by some as muscular and tightly coiled in its youth. Well, while it's still got some serious heft behind it, the 12 years of careful cellaring has softened the brash bravado, and a more elegant and refined wine has emerged, much to its betterment. The velvety tannins and spice have softened, the deep broody fruit has beautifully integrated into earthy layered complexity, all while providing harmonious balance with the supple acid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Museum releases represent wines that have been carefully cellared by the winery for extended periods to showcase their ageing potential. This 2013 Carlei Estate has undergone 12 years of professional cellaring, transforming from what was initially described as 'muscular and tightly coiled' into a refined, elegant expression. The extended ageing has allowed the 40% new French oak to fully integrate, creating the complex, layered wine you're experiencing today.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for producing elegant Pinot Noir with natural acidity and refined tannin structure. This terroir contributes to the wine's ability to age gracefully, developing the earthy complexity and harmonious balance evident in this mature example. The region's reputation for producing some of Australia's finest Pinot Noir is clearly demonstrated in how beautifully this wine has evolved over its 12-year journey.

The 40% new French oak regime was initially quite prominent, giving the wine its 'muscular' character in youth. However, French oak is prized for its ability to integrate seamlessly over time, contributing subtle spice and structural complexity without overwhelming the fruit. After 12 years, the oak has become a supporting player rather than the star, allowing the Pinot Noir's inherent elegance and the Yarra Valley terroir to shine through.

Serve this museum release at cellar temperature (14-16°C) to fully appreciate its evolved complexity and velvety tannin structure. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help the wine open up and reveal its layered earthy characteristics. The wine's refined nature pairs beautifully with duck, game birds, or aged cheeses, where its medium body and integrated tannins won't overpower delicate flavours.

This wine is drinking beautifully now, having reached an optimal maturity where all elements are harmoniously balanced. The transformation from its youthful, tightly coiled state to its current elegant expression suggests it's at its peak drinking window. While quality Yarra Valley Pinot Noir can continue evolving, the current integration of fruit, oak, and tannins makes this an ideal time to enjoy this carefully aged expression.
