Robert Parker once called the man behind this wine "one of the greatest winemakers on planet earth." We can't tell you his name. But we can tell you he earned it. This is Grand Cru McLaren Vale grenache - and that's not a marketing term, that's a genuine classification given to this single vineyard site in Blewitt Springs. 97 Wine Advocate. 96 Suckling. 96 Gary Walsh. 95 Halliday. Made only in the best years... got your attention yet?

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Bush vines planted in the 1940s, growing in soil so dense with rock that after eight decades of trying, the vines have barely managed 30 centimetres of height. Low yields, extreme concentration, and approximately 500 cases produced for the entire world. What's in the bottle is extraordinary - violet, musk, and rose petal on the nose, with layers of blueberry, raspberry and cherry skin woven through crushed rock minerality and a weightless, incense-like lift. The tannins are supple and are beautifully integrated, giving the wine an effortless power that's impossible to fake and impossible to rush.

Frequently Asked Questions

These Grenache vines were planted in the 1940s and grow in extraordinarily rocky soil that has stunted their growth to just 30 centimetres after eight decades. This extreme stress forces the vines to produce incredibly low yields while concentrating all their energy into developing intense, complex flavours. Bush vines also self-regulate their crop load naturally, eliminating the need for human intervention and creating wines with exceptional depth and character that simply cannot be replicated with modern trellised vineyards.

Only approximately 500 cases of this wine were produced for the entire world, making it exceptionally scarce. The combination of ancient bush vines, rocky soil conditions, and naturally low yields means each vine produces very little fruit. Clarendon Hills' commitment to minimal intervention winemaking and their refusal to compromise quality for quantity ensures this remains one of Australia's most sought-after and limited Grenache expressions.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse geology create ideal conditions for Grenache, allowing the variety to express its full potential. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes help maintain acidity while developing complex aromatics like the violet and rose petal notes found in this wine. The dense, rocky soils characteristic of certain McLaren Vale sites contribute the distinctive crushed rock minerality that gives this wine its unique sense of place and terroir expression.

Scoring 97 points from Wine Advocate, 96 from James Suckling, and 95 from Halliday Wine Companion indicates this wine represents the absolute pinnacle of Australian Grenache. These consistently high scores from respected critics worldwide demonstrate the wine's exceptional quality, complexity, and aging potential. Such unanimous critical acclaim is rare and typically reserved for wines that showcase perfect harmony between vineyard site, vintage conditions, and winemaking expertise.

This 2013 vintage is now entering its optimal drinking window, where the initial fruit intensity has evolved into more complex secondary flavours while maintaining freshness. The supple, integrated tannins mean it's approachable now, but the wine's structure and concentration suggest it will continue developing for another decade. Decant for 30-60 minutes to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves, and serve at cellar temperature to appreciate the wine's elegant balance between power and finesse.
