This is a mammoth producer on the Aussie wine scene. Their wines are not only among the best of the region, but the best of the continent. Any discussion about Australia's leading wineries that doesn't include this producer is, by default, incomplete. And what are they famous for? This. Deeply ageable, single-vineyard red wines that drink like a dream for 25 years plus after harvest.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Beautifully blue fruited despite the not-insignificant time in cellar. It has such richness and deep, brooding, plummy weight. A distinctly impressive wine that is in perfect shape – I suspect we may have intersected it at the height of its drinking window, though it will surely stay there for some time. Beyond the dense fruit profile there's notes of char, spice, bristly acid, wet earth, umami, terracotta, cedar and pine – entirely too much going on to capture in one thought. Buy it now, but be sure to save a bottle for when the rellos come by for Christmas lunch (or for when they leave, depending on how much you like your rellos).

Frequently Asked Questions

Grenache's naturally high acidity and robust tannin structure make it one of the most age-worthy red varietals, particularly when grown in premium sites like McLaren Vale. This wine demonstrates the grape's ability to develop complex tertiary flavours - the umami, wet earth, and cedar notes - while retaining its core fruit integrity. The producer's winemaking approach has clearly preserved the wine's balance, allowing it to reach what appears to be its optimal drinking window.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cool sea breezes, creates perfect conditions for Grenache to ripen slowly while maintaining acidity. The region's diverse soils, including the famous terra rossa over limestone, contribute to the wine's distinctive earthy and mineral characteristics. This terroir combination allows Grenache to express both power and elegance, as evidenced by this wine's complex profile of blue fruits, spice, and terracotta notes.

Decant this wine 1-2 hours before serving to allow the complex aromatics to fully develop and any sediment to settle. Serve at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to showcase its medium-bodied structure and intricate flavour layers. The wine's umami and earthy characteristics make it exceptional with roasted meats, aged cheeses, or Mediterranean dishes featuring herbs and olives.

The 'bristly acid' indicates a wine with vibrant, mouth-watering acidity that provides structure and freshness despite its age, while 'brooding' suggests concentrated, contemplative flavours that unfold slowly on the palate. These characteristics are hallmarks of well-made Grenache that has been cellared properly. The combination creates a wine with both immediate appeal and long-term complexity that rewards patient tasting.

This wine appears to be at its peak drinking window, showing perfect integration of fruit, acid, and tannins with fully developed tertiary characteristics. While it will likely hold this plateau for several more years, there's no benefit to further cellaring - the wine has reached its optimal expression. The reviewer's suggestion to 'buy it now' reflects the rarity of finding a perfectly mature Grenache at this stage of development.
