It's hard not to get carried away with a wine like this. All the richness, ripeness and flat-out grunt that you'd expect from the Barossa. All the structure, leafiness and subtle complexity that you'd expect from cabernet. You could say 'the best of both worlds' but we just reckon this one's 'the best'.

Why do we love this wine?

Barossa cab often gets overshadowed by its spotlight-hoarding mate shiraz, but as this wine will show, Barossa cabernet can definitely hold its own with the big boys! This one is sourced from a single vineyard site planted on red clay and limestone. As you’d expect from a Barossa red, it’s beautifully ripe and rich, with an intricate palate of plum, spice, cassis and cedar. The tannins are chalky and the finish is long. with a couple of years under the belt, this wine has up to a decade of enjoyment ahead of it, so if it sounds like your thing, one six pack may not be enough!

Frequently Asked Questions

Barossa Valley built its reputation on powerful, iconic Shiraz wines that dominate international recognition, but this creates an unfair shadow over the region's exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. The warm climate and diverse soils that make Barossa Shiraz famous also produce Cabernet with remarkable concentration and complexity. This Research Road Cabernet demonstrates that Barossa can craft world-class Cabernet Sauvignon that rivals the region's celebrated Shiraz, offering a different but equally compelling expression of the valley's terroir.

Single vineyard wines express the unique characteristics of one specific site rather than blending fruit from multiple locations, creating a more focused and authentic representation of place. The Research Road vineyard's red clay and limestone soils provide ideal drainage and mineral complexity that directly influences the wine's chalky tannin structure and long finish. This terroir-driven approach allows the 95-point rated wine to showcase the distinctive personality of this particular Barossa site, rather than a generalised regional style.

Red clay soils retain moisture and provide steady water supply during Barossa's hot summers, while limestone contributes crucial acidity and mineral backbone to prevent the wine from becoming overly heavy. This soil combination creates the wine's signature chalky tannins and helps maintain freshness despite the rich, full-bodied style. The limestone particularly enhances the wine's ageing potential, providing the structural foundation that allows this 2021 vintage to develop complexity over the next decade.

The wine's rich plum and cassis flavours, combined with cedar notes and chalky tannins, make it perfect for robust red meat dishes like grilled ribeye or slow-cooked lamb shanks. The oaky and tobacco characteristics complement aged cheeses and charcuterie, while the cocoa undertones pair beautifully with dark chocolate desserts. The wine's full-bodied structure can stand up to bold flavours like barbecued meats with smoky marinades or hearty winter stews with rich, savoury gravies.

With a couple of years already under its belt and up to a decade of enjoyment ahead, this wine is entering its prime drinking window while retaining excellent cellaring potential. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place around 12-15°C to allow the chalky tannins to soften and integrate further with the fruit. The wine's structure suggests it will develop more complex secondary flavours like leather and earth over the next 5-8 years, though it's already showing beautifully now for those who prefer more primary fruit expression.
