Why do we love this wine?

A cellar release with a lucky 9 years of evolution - give it a burl, and you’ll see that it is only starting to touch its prime drinking window. Usually exclusive to the wine producer’s database, this trickles out to us only when we are lucky, somehow our charming wine buyers have managed to get on that lucky list.

Boisterous tannins that have mellowed to a brooding, silky palate, with chunky fruit joined by herbaceous and somewhat meaty notes. There’s still classic cabernet cassis and blackberry, which is accompanied by rosemary, thyme and a long and savoury finish. Be quick, mofo - you too should be so lucky!

Frequently Asked Questions

This Cabernet Sauvignon has reached that sweet spot where aggressive young tannins have transformed into silky, brooding textures while retaining vibrant fruit character. The extended cellaring has allowed complex secondary flavours like rosemary and thyme to emerge alongside the classic cassis and blackberry notes. At 9 years old, it's entering its prime drinking window where primary fruit and developed savoury characteristics achieve perfect harmony.

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil - that distinctive red earth over limestone - provides exceptional drainage while retaining moisture, creating perfect conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The region's cool climate allows for slow, even ripening that develops intense flavours while maintaining natural acidity. This combination produces Cabernets with remarkable structure and ageing potential, as demonstrated by this wine's beautiful evolution over nine years.

While the specific meaning isn't detailed, RSR likely represents Reschke's premium tier or special reserve designation, indicating their finest fruit selection and winemaking techniques. Premium designations like this typically involve hand-selected grapes from the best vineyard blocks, extended fermentation, and careful oak treatment. The 96-point Wine Orbit rating and exclusive cellar release status confirm this represents the pinnacle of Reschke's Cabernet Sauvignon production.

Decant this wine 1-2 hours before serving to allow the evolved tannins to fully express themselves and the herbaceous, meaty notes to integrate beautifully. Serve at 16-18°C to showcase both the silky texture and complex aromatics that have developed over nine years. The wine's savoury finish and medium body make it perfect with roasted meats, aged cheeses, or herb-crusted lamb that will complement those rosemary and thyme characteristics.

The wine's evolved tannins and herbaceous notes make it exceptional with slow-cooked dishes like braised beef or lamb shanks where the savoury, meaty characteristics can shine. The rosemary and thyme flavours pair beautifully with Mediterranean cuisine, particularly herb-crusted rack of lamb or beef with garlic and herbs. Aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar or Parmigiano-Reggiano will complement the wine's developed complexity while the silky tannins won't overpower more delicate preparations.
