Why do we love this wine?

The Struie is an absolute staple of the Australian fine wine landscape and displays Torbreck’s relentless quest for perfection. A recent visit to their impeccable facilities in Maranaga solidified for me that they are an absolutely world class producer.

The Struie is from predominantly Barossa fruit, with a splash of high altitude Eden shiraz which provides a graceful lift of perfumed aromatics, bound to get those taste buds dancing. This vintage shows concentrated, high quality grapes, coupled with 18 months in French oak barrels (20% of which is new) and you’ve got a core of power surrounded by a lashing of finesse. From vines averaging 50 years of age, the Struie remains as consistent as ever and this is a bottle you can certainly show off to wine aficionados world wide. Drinking well now and for the next decade at least!

Erin Larkin

The 2021 The Struie is 100% Shiraz from both the Barossa (57%) and the Eden Valley (43%), and it matured for 18 months in French oak (20% new). The proportion of Eden Valley inclusion is usually around 25%, but in 2019, it was down to 10% due to the very low yields. So, this 2021 Struie is blue-fruited on the nose, with blueberry, licorice, black tea, crushed rocks, summer raspberry, layers of campfire embers and clove. It might be that in many of the tasting notes from 2021, that the wines outperform previous vintages. This is because the cool season was long, so great ripeness was achieved, without the stress or impact of heat events and disease. It’s a lovely, lovely year that has made wines with freshness and intensity. The tannins through the finish here are savory and fine and black.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Struie's distinctive character comes from blending predominantly Barossa fruit with high-altitude Eden Valley Shiraz, creating a unique marriage of power and elegance. The Eden Valley component adds perfumed aromatics and graceful lift that distinguishes it from typical heavy Barossa expressions. This regional blending technique, combined with fruit from 50-year-old vines, creates complexity that showcases both the richness Barossa is famous for and the finesse that Eden Valley contributes.

This 2021 vintage is drinking beautifully now but has excellent cellaring potential for at least a decade. The combination of concentrated fruit, 18 months in French oak, and the structure from mature vines means it will continue developing complexity over time. The wine's full-bodied nature and mineral backbone suggest it will reward patient collectors, with the tannins softening and secondary flavours emerging through the 2030s.

The rich blackberry and chocolate flavours, combined with the wine's mineral backbone, make it perfect for robust dishes like grilled lamb, aged beef steaks, or game meats. The French oak treatment and full-bodied structure can handle rich sauces and strong cheeses beautifully. For something different, try it with dark chocolate desserts or barbecued meats where the wine's power won't be overwhelmed by bold flavours.

The exceptional ratings (96 points from Erin Larkin, 95 from James Suckling) reflect Torbreck's world-class winemaking and this vintage's outstanding quality. Critics recognise the perfect balance achieved between the concentrated Barossa fruit character and the elegant lift from Eden Valley components. The consistent excellence of The Struie over many vintages, combined with Torbreck's reputation as an Icon Producer, demonstrates why this wine is considered a staple of Australian fine wine.

The 18 months in French oak barrels, with 20% new oak, adds structure and complexity without overwhelming the fruit character. French oak typically imparts more subtle, spicy notes compared to American oak, allowing the wine's natural blackberry and chocolate flavours to shine while adding vanilla and cedar undertones. This careful oak integration creates the 'core of power surrounded by finesse' that defines The Struie's sophisticated style, distinguishing it from more overtly oaked Australian Shiraz expressions.
