Thorn-Clarke Bona Fide Shiraz 2018
- Rich, full-bodied
- Barossa Valley
Thorne-Clarke: a meeting of two families that settled on Barossa soils over a century ago. Like many, it’s a story of hard work, nose to the ground, generation after generation. Fast forward to the 21st century, and it’s all about their classy wines that stand out from the pack. True to their terroir-driven ethos, the Bona Fide shiraz is all about small scale and a watchful eye. Single vineyard, small batch fermentation, followed by American oak treatment for 18months (40% new). Only the best of the best made it to the final blend, meaning that you, yes YOU Mofo, are only getting the very best.

Producer
Thorn-Clarke
Synonymous with success and quality, Thorne-Clarke is truly a first-class family business that shows no signs of slowing down. Since its inception in the Australian wine industry in 1987, Thorn-Clarke adapted the simple, age-old saying "you can't make good wine from bad grapes" which continues to inspire them 27 years on. Considered a stalwart of the Barossa, Thorne-Clarke's rich history within the region goes back to six generations of proud Barossan winemaking and craftsmanship, so it seemed natural that husband-and--wife team David and Cheryl Clarke (ne Thorn) would start up their own namesake winery. A permanent fixture in South Australia, the hardworking team spearheaded by Helen McCarthy since 2011 continue to wave the flag for distinct, world-class wines which showcase the best of the region. Celebrated as one of the largest family-owned estate-based businesses in the Barossa, Thorn-Clarke are proud owners of four vineyards (Two in the Barossa Valley for reds and two in the Eden Valley for whites) which have produced an impressive range of award winning wines for almost three decades.
Region
Barossa Valley
'Barossa Valley'. This is Australia's key wine brand overseas, in the US especially. It's our riposte to 'Champagne', 'Scotch' and 'Barolo'. My mind conjures these images, in this order: Shiraz, Penfolds wine, Maggie Beer condiments. All of which can GET - IN - MY - BELLY! But there is so much more to the Barossa than first glance. There are fringe (and not so fringe) winemakers actively working to classify the valley's subregions, and this is a very worthy cause. From Moppa to Seppeltsfield to Marananga there's a lot of variation, and the styles produced can vary immensely. This is the next step in the vision of this region (which, let's face it, is a baby in the scheme of things), as it gets acquainted with its strengths, weaknesses and future opportunities. It's a region that's not sorry to produce the big, fruit-driven wine styles that make it so popular. So drink to the future of the Barossa, because it's as bright as any other region on the world stage.
