Why do we love this wine?

Thorne-Clarke: a meeting of two families that settled on Barossa soils over a century ago. Like many, it’s a story of hard work, nose to the ground, generation after generation. Fast forward to the 21st century, and it’s all about their classy wines that stand out from the pack. True to their terroir-driven ethos, the Bona Fide shiraz is all about small scale and a watchful eye. Single vineyard, small batch fermentation, followed by American oak treatment for 18months (40% new). Only the best of the best made it to the final blend, meaning that you, yes YOU Mofo, are only getting the very best.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a single vineyard, small batch wine where only the finest parcels made it into the final blend - a stark contrast to large commercial operations that blend across multiple sites for consistency. The 18-month American oak maturation (40% new barrels) and meticulous selection process reflects the artisanal approach that Barossa's boutique producers are renowned for. This level of attention simply isn't economically viable for high-volume wines.

The 2018 vintage in Barossa was marked by excellent growing conditions that produced wines with exceptional concentration and balance. This vintage is now reaching its optimal drinking window, where the initial fruit intensity has integrated beautifully with the oak tannins. The wine shows the classic Barossa power while maintaining elegance - a hallmark of this outstanding year that critics widely praised across the region.

The rich blackberry and spice profile, enhanced by American oak, makes this wine perfect for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb shanks, barbecued beef ribs, or aged hard cheeses. The black olive notes create an interesting bridge to Mediterranean flavours - try it with herb-crusted leg of lamb or even a rich mushroom risotto. The wine's structure can handle bold flavours without being overwhelmed.

Wine Orbit's 95-point rating reflects the wine's exceptional balance between power and finesse - a difficult achievement in full-bodied Shiraz. The single vineyard sourcing ensures terroir expression, while the careful oak integration (18 months in American barrels) adds complexity without masking the fruit. This score places it among Australia's elite Shiraz wines, recognising both the quality of the vintage and the winemaker's skill in crafting something truly special.

This 2018 Shiraz is drinking beautifully now, having had six years to integrate its components, but quality Barossa Shiraz like this can easily cellar for another 8-12 years. The American oak tannins provide excellent structure for ageing, while the concentrated fruit will continue to evolve and develop secondary characters. If you enjoy more primary fruit flavours, drink it within the next 3-4 years; for more complex, earthy development, cellar it longer.
