This is tempranillo showing its lighter, brighter side. From the cool, high-altitude slopes of the Adelaide Hills, it’s bursting with juicy red fruits - strawberries, pomegranate and black cherry - lifted by a subtle savoury twist of tobacco and bay leaf. It's plush and silky, with soft tannins and a fresh acid kick that keeps it lively right through to the finish.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Strawberries, pomegranate and black cherry with a little tobacco spice. Smooth, supple and impossible to stop sipping. Kept sleek and fruit-driven with just a touch of French oak, this is all about drinkability. No heavy tannin, no big oak cloak - just pure, vibrant fruit and a smooth glide. Grown on old vines near Kersbrook, the concentration is there, but the style stays wonderfully fresh. Food-wise? Think BBQ. Charred lamb chops, smoky chorizo or even just grilled veggies - this wine is built to hang out by the fire and disappear fast.

Frequently Asked Questions

While Spanish Tempranillo often showcases earthy, leathery characteristics from extended oak ageing, this McLaren Vale expression prioritises fresh fruit purity with minimal French oak influence. The Australian terroir brings out vibrant strawberry and pomegranate notes that are less common in traditional Rioja styles. The warmer climate and old vine concentration create a fuller body whilst maintaining the grape's natural elegance and food-friendly acidity.

The winemaker has crafted this Tempranillo with exceptional drinkability by avoiding heavy extraction and excessive oak treatment. The smooth tannin structure and bright fruit-forward profile create a wine that doesn't fatigue the palate, while the tobacco spice adds just enough complexity to keep each sip interesting. This balance between concentration from old vines and fresh, approachable style makes it dangerously easy to finish a bottle.

The wine's smoky undertones and full body make it exceptional with grilled and barbecued foods, particularly charred lamb chops and chorizo where the wine's fruit intensity can stand up to bold flavours. The moderate tannins and bright acidity also complement grilled vegetables beautifully, while the cherry and pomegranate notes create lovely harmony with Mediterranean herbs and spices commonly used in outdoor cooking.

Old vines typically produce smaller yields of more concentrated fruit, which explains the depth and intensity of flavours in this Tempranillo despite its fresh style. The Kersbrook location, with its cooler Adelaide Hills influence, helps retain natural acidity and prevents the fruit from becoming overripe. This combination of old vine concentration and cooler climate positioning allows the wine to achieve full body whilst maintaining the vibrant, food-friendly character that defines the style.

This 2023 Tempranillo is crafted for immediate enjoyment, with its fruit-driven style and smooth tannin structure making it perfect for current consumption. The minimal oak treatment and emphasis on drinkability suggest the winemaker intended this as a wine to enjoy young and fresh. While it may develop some additional complexity over 2-3 years, the vibrant fruit characteristics that define this wine are at their peak now.
