Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Heathcote’s ancient red soils are genuinely magic, and grenache thrives in them. The warm days, deep roots and low-fertility Cambrian earth deliver fruit that’s both ripe and refined. The nose is fragrant and lifted - raspberry, strawberry and red cherry with hints of rose petal, clove and thyme. On the palate, it’s plush yet poised, with layers of juicy berry fruit propped up by fine, velvety tannins. There’s a gentle warmth here, balanced by freshness, leading to a finish that’s smooth, savoury and moreish. From vineyard to bottle, it’s a wine shaped by place and patience. Whether you’re pairing it with chargrilled lamb, crispy-skin chicken or simply enjoying it with mates, this is Heathcote at its most charming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Heathcote's ancient Cambrian soils, formed over 500 million years ago, create ideal conditions for grenache with their deep red colour and low fertility forcing vines to develop extensive root systems. The warm continental climate with cool nights allows grenache to ripen fully while retaining natural acidity. This combination of old earth and climate extremes produces grenache with exceptional concentration and elegance that's distinctly Australian yet reminiscent of the variety's Mediterranean origins.

Unlike the bold, extracted style often associated with Australian reds, this grenache showcases a more refined, medium-bodied approach that emphasises finesse over power. The elegant, lighter style with its fragrant aromatics and velvety tannins represents a growing trend towards food-friendly Australian wines. It bridges the gap between the intensity of Barossa shiraz and the delicacy of cool-climate pinot noir, offering complexity without overwhelming the palate.

The wine's medium body and balanced tannins make it incredibly versatile with food, particularly excelling with dishes that have some richness but aren't overly heavy. The berry fruit flavours and herbal notes complement Mediterranean cuisine beautifully, while the wine's freshness cuts through the fat in grilled meats. Beyond the suggested lamb and chicken, try it with duck confit, mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses where its savoury finish can shine.

As a 2024 vintage, this grenache is drinking beautifully now with its vibrant fruit flavours and supple tannins perfectly integrated. Grenache typically develops complexity relatively quickly compared to cabernet sauvignon or shiraz, and this wine's approachable style suggests it's crafted for near-term enjoyment. While it could develop additional savoury complexity over 3-5 years, the current balance of freshness and ripeness makes it ideal for immediate consumption.

James Halliday's Five Star rating represents the pinnacle of Australian winery recognition, awarded to fewer than 100 wineries nationwide based on consistent excellence across their range. For Tellurian, this rating reflects their mastery of Heathcote's unique terroir and commitment to expressing site-specific character in their wines. The rating indicates that this grenache comes from a producer with proven track record of quality, making it a reliable choice for both casual drinking and special occasions.
