Why do we love this wine?

There isn’t a more iconic New Zealand wine than Te Mata Coleraine. Full stop. The Sydney Morning Herald called it ‘New Zealand’s greatest red wine’. Its 1998 vintage is the only wine from New Zealand to be named a ‘Wine Legend’ by Decanter Magazine. This is probably amongst the most exclusive list of wines in the world, and includes such Aussie classics as 1955 Penfolds Grange. We could go on and on. The bottom line is that this is one of the most celebrated wines ever produced, and you can trust that Vinomofo is bringing you a very small number of bottles.

The 2021 edition is just a bit over 50% cabernet sauvignon, around 1/3 merlot and the rest cabernet franc. It’s intensely perfumed and beguilingly complex. We’d put it up against those First Growth Bordeaux that go for thousands of dollars without hesitation. The critics of course agree, always scoring the wine in the high 90’s.

I was lucky enough to taste this at a vintage launch lunch recently and it blew me away, drilling home the true pedigree of great Hawkes Bay cabernet. Our tiny allocation will sell out quickly, but you don’t need to drink it quickly. There’s easily 20+ years of ageing potential here. I was graced with a taste of that 1998 Coleraine at the aforementioned lunch, showing so lively and bright still 20+ years later. That’s a long life ahead for New Zealand’s most iconic wine. Are you ready to be a part of that journey?

Redcurrant and creme de cassis aromas. Roses. So aromatic. Stones. Oyster and mussel shell. Ink pot. Lead pencil shavings. Full-bodied but very tight and focused. Linear and long with fine, powdery and chewy tannins. Crushed velvet texture. 56% cabernet sauvignon, 32% merlot, and 12% cabernet franc. More franc than normal in the blend. Terrific length.

Frequently Asked Questions

Te Mata Coleraine holds the unique distinction of being New Zealand's only wine to achieve 'Wine Legend' status from Decanter Magazine, joining an elite global list that includes icons like 1955 Penfolds Grange. The Sydney Morning Herald has declared it 'New Zealand's greatest red wine', and it consistently scores in the high 90s from critics worldwide. This recognition stems from decades of exceptional winemaking that has established Hawke's Bay as a world-class cabernet region, proving that New Zealand can produce reds that rival the finest Bordeaux estates.

The 2021 vintage showcases a masterful blend of just over 50% cabernet sauvignon providing the backbone and structure, around one-third merlot contributing plushness and approachable fruit flavours, with cabernet franc adding aromatic complexity and spice. This composition creates what's described as 'intensely perfumed and beguilingly complex' - the cabernet sauvignon delivers those classic pencil shaving notes and firm tannins, while the merlot softens the palate with blackberry richness, and the cabernet franc elevates the aromatic profile with herbaceous and floral nuances.

This wine boasts an impressive 20+ years of ageing potential, as evidenced by tastings of the legendary 1998 vintage that still shows remarkable vibrancy and brightness after more than two decades. The full-bodied structure, high-quality tannins, and balanced acidity provide the foundation for extended cellaring, during which the wine will develop greater complexity and integration. Store it in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature, and expect the wine to evolve from its current youthful intensity into something even more nuanced and sophisticated over the coming decades.

Hawke's Bay's unique terroir combines warm, dry summers with gravelly soils that provide excellent drainage - conditions that mirror some of Bordeaux's finest appellations. The region's maritime influence moderates temperatures, allowing for slow, even ripening that develops complex flavour compounds while maintaining natural acidity. This terroir produces cabernet sauvignon with remarkable concentration and structure, as demonstrated by Coleraine's ability to compete with First Growth Bordeaux wines that sell for thousands of dollars, proving that New Zealand's North Island can produce world-class cabernet blends.

The wine's full-bodied nature and complex flavour profile of blackberry, pencil shavings, and spice make it ideal for rich, protein-heavy dishes that can match its intensity. Classic pairings include aged beef steaks, lamb with rosemary and garlic, or game meats like venison, where the wine's tannins will soften and complement the meat's richness. The spice notes also work beautifully with dishes featuring herbs like thyme and bay leaves, while the blackberry fruit can bridge beautifully with dishes incorporating dark fruits or balsamic reductions.
