Potentially controversial, but the Yarra Valley is Australia's best cabernet producing region. There has always been push and pull as to whether the region is best suited to Burgundian or Bordeaux varietals, but, for me at least, the Yarra Valley can do it all.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Overwhelmingly cabernet with a little under 1/10 Malbec for good measure. New french oak gives plushness and shape, the density of the fruit (and the quality) gives drive, power, and grunt. A swirl of red and blue fruit at the fore, earth, spice, tobacco, and cedar follow quickly behind. This is stylish and finessed cabernet, as the cooler Yarra Valley is want to produce, and that bit of elegance is welcome - it pulls on the reigns of what is otherwise a full force, full bodied, beast of a wine.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

" 91/9% cabernet sauvignon/malbec, aged 18 months in 23% new French oak barriques, then blended and matured 6 months in foudre. The full bottle weighs just a few grams under 2kg – not something to be proud of. I needed someone with the strength of Ulysses to help lift and pour it. This has come together well, with cassis and currant coated in savoury flavours of pepper, char and wild herbs. It's full bodied but not unwieldy, as the tannins are fine, long and ripe. Incredibly fresh. It's worth noting the top cabernets from the Yarra are not in monstrously heavy bottles like this one." 95 Points.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cooler Yarra Valley climate produces a more elegant and finessed style of Cabernet Sauvignon compared to warmer regions. While this wine still delivers full-bodied power and intensity, the cooler conditions allow for better retention of natural acidity and more refined tannin structure. This creates a wine that balances brute force with sophistication - you get the density and grunt typical of great Cabernet, but with an elegant restraint that prevents it from becoming overly heavy or jammy.

The small addition of Malbec (just under 10%) serves as a strategic blending component to enhance the wine's structure and complexity. Malbec contributes deeper colour intensity, softer mid-palate texture, and additional spice notes that complement Cabernet's natural power. This classic Bordeaux-style blending technique helps create a more harmonious wine - the Malbec fills in any gaps in the flavour profile while adding its own distinctive character without overwhelming the dominant Cabernet Sauvignon varietal expression.

The new French oak plays a crucial role in shaping this wine's texture and flavour development, providing what's described as 'plushness and shape'. French oak is prized for its tight grain structure, which imparts more subtle vanilla and spice notes compared to American oak, while contributing elegant tannins that integrate seamlessly with the fruit. The oak treatment enhances the wine's cedar and tobacco characteristics while providing a structural backbone that supports the intense fruit concentration without masking the terroir-driven qualities of the Yarra Valley.

James Halliday's 95-point rating places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, representing exceptional quality that's recognised at the highest level of Australian wine assessment. Halliday, one of Australia's most respected wine critics, reserves scores above 94 points for wines showing remarkable complexity, perfect balance, and significant ageing potential. This rating suggests the wine demonstrates textbook varietal character, excellent winemaking technique, and the ability to develop further complexity over many years in the cellar.

As a premium Yarra Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with this level of concentration and structure, the 2018 vintage has excellent cellaring potential of 15-20 years from vintage. Currently at six years of age, it's entering its optimal drinking window where the primary fruit flavours are integrating beautifully with the oak and developing complex secondary characteristics. The wine's full-bodied nature, quality tannin structure, and balanced acidity provide the foundation for graceful long-term ageing, with peak drinking likely occurring over the next decade.
