From the legendary Beechworth region - known for bold, powerful wines. This is one of the best Aussie iterations of nebbiolo we’ve had the pleasure of trying.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Nebbiolo, one of Italy’s most highly sought-after grapes, creating some of the most premium wines the country has to offer, Barolo and Barbaresco, just to name a couple. There’s a mass of complexity here, with dried herbs and flowers layered atop ripe red fruits on the nose. The palate is incredibly interesting, while being sensationally moreish, with savoury red fruits and cocoa supported by ripe tannins and clean acidity that carries excellent length. If you’re looking for something with elegance, grace and class that doesn’t shy away from bold Aussie flavours, this is the drop for you!

Frequently Asked Questions

This Beechworth Nebbiolo showcases the unique Australian terroir while maintaining the grape's classic characteristics. The warmer Australian climate produces riper fruit flavours and softer tannins compared to the austere, high-acid profile typical of Piedmontese Nebbiolo. Star Lane's amphora fermentation adds textural complexity and allows the wine's natural aromatics to shine, creating a more approachable style that bridges Old World elegance with New World fruit intensity.

Amphora fermentation is an ancient winemaking technique that uses clay vessels instead of steel or oak, allowing for gentle micro-oxygenation without imparting woody flavours. This method enhances the wine's natural texture and preserves the delicate floral and herbal characteristics that make Nebbiolo so distinctive. The porous clay allows the wine to breathe naturally, developing complexity while maintaining the grape's inherent elegance and the rose petal aromatics that define quality Nebbiolo.

Serve this medium-bodied Nebbiolo slightly below room temperature (16-18°C) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balanced tannins. The wine's savoury profile and tarry, tobacco notes make it excellent with grilled meats, aged cheeses, or mushroom-based dishes. Its clean acidity and elegant structure also complement charcuterie and herb-crusted lamb, while the cocoa undertones pair beautifully with dark chocolate desserts.

A 95-point rating from Wine Orbit indicates exceptional quality and places this wine in the top tier of Australian Nebbiolo. This score reflects the wine's outstanding balance, complexity, and expression of both varietal character and regional terroir. The additional accolades including 'Five Stars', 'Killer Vintage', and 'Cult Producer' status suggest Star Lane has achieved something truly special with this release, demonstrating mastery of this notoriously difficult grape variety.

Nebbiolo is renowned for its aging potential, and this 2021 vintage should develop beautifully over the next 8-12 years. The wine's structured tannins and clean acidity provide the backbone for long-term cellaring, during which the rose petal and dried herb aromatics will evolve into more complex tertiary notes of leather, earth, and spice. While approachable now, patience will be rewarded as the wine's savoury elements integrate further and its textural complexity deepens.
