The team aim for power with elegance. Maturation was for twelve months in a combination of French oak barriques and hogsheads. The colour here is a deep dark blood red. The aromas swirl through chocolate, spices, herbs, a hint of nutmeg, black fruits, cold tea and bergamot. Focused, with good length, it finishes with slightly grippy tannins. Enjoy any time over the next six to eight years.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 'Blood & Courage' represents the modern Australian approach to accessible premium wine - crafted to be enjoyed without ceremony while maintaining the rich, full-bodied character that Barossa Shiraz is famous for. Its approachable style makes it perfect for casual weeknight dinners, yet it carries enough complexity with blackberry, cherry and spice notes to satisfy serious wine lovers. This philosophy of 'wine for the people' reflects a growing trend among Australian producers to create wines that bridge the gap between everyday drinking and special occasion bottles.

The 2021 vintage earned a 'Killer Vintage' rating of 90 points, indicating exceptional quality for this year in the Barossa. This vintage benefited from ideal growing conditions that allowed Shiraz grapes to develop concentrated flavours while maintaining balance. The Barossa's warm climate and ancient soils particularly excelled in 2021, producing wines with the region's signature power but also remarkable drinkability. For collectors and casual drinkers alike, 2021 Barossa Shiraz represents excellent value and immediate enjoyment potential.

This rich, spice-driven Shiraz is incredibly versatile for food matching, particularly excelling with grilled meats, hearty stews, and robust pasta dishes. The blackberry and cherry fruit flavours complement barbecued lamb or beef, while the spice elements make it an excellent match for dishes featuring pepper, herbs, or even mild curry spices. Its full-bodied nature means it won't be overwhelmed by strong cheeses or rich sauces, making it ideal for everything from a simple weeknight bolognese to weekend entertaining with charcuterie boards.

While this Shiraz is designed for immediate enjoyment and weeknight drinking, its full-bodied structure and 90-point rating suggest it has the backbone for short to medium-term cellaring. The 2021 vintage is drinking beautifully now, showing vibrant fruit and integrated spice, but could develop additional complexity over 3-5 years. For maximum enjoyment of its fresh berry characteristics and approachable style, drinking within the next 2-3 years is recommended, though wine lovers who prefer more developed, earthy flavours might benefit from longer cellaring.

St Johns Road's 'wine for the people' ethos is evident in every aspect of this Shiraz - from the bold, memorable name 'Blood & Courage' to its accessible yet sophisticated flavour profile. Rather than creating an intimidating, overly complex wine, they've focused on immediate appeal and food-friendly characteristics while maintaining the quality standards that earned this wine 90 points. This approach reflects a broader movement in Australian winemaking towards democratising premium wine, making exceptional quality accessible for everyday occasions rather than reserving it only for special celebrations.
