Moody, dark, swirling black fruits sit right at the core of this quintessentially Barossan beast. A smattering of red and blue fruits provide freshness and a little lift to what is otherwise Very Serious Business.

Why do we love this wine?

There is no mistaking a St Hallet classic - when it comes to shiraz, and when it comes to Barossa, they don't muck about. The Sacred Ground is an old favourite among the 'big and bold' faithful, and this iteration is no departure from that well earned reputation. Rich, ripe, chocolate, earthy and opulent. Little flecks of cedar and tobacco sit deftly around determined, full throttle fruit density. St Hallet at their best - unashamedly broad and imposing while remaining stylish, complex, and relinquishing no ground when it comes to sophistication.

I remember my first taste of this wine at St Hallett. It was, without a doubt, a real hallelujah moment. It comes together so seamlessly, and without a hint of shyness; rhubarb compote and vanilla bean meets beef jerky and star anise, before unfurling into an array of black cherry and licorice depth. There's so much length, and so much to love.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barossa Valley's warm continental climate and ancient soils create the perfect conditions for producing powerful, concentrated Shiraz like this Sacred Ground. The region's old vine heritage and traditional winemaking approach result in wines with exceptional depth and complexity. St Hallett exemplifies this Barossa style with their uncompromising approach to full-bodied, richly flavoured Shiraz that showcases the terroir's natural intensity.

Serve this Sacred Ground Shiraz at 16-18°C to allow its complex chocolate, cedar and tobacco notes to fully express themselves. Decant for 30-60 minutes before serving to soften the tannins and enhance the wine's sophisticated structure. The wine's opulent fruit density and full throttle character make it perfect for pairing with rich red meats, aged cheeses, or hearty winter dishes.

The 97 points from Wine Orbit and 95 points from Huon Hooke indicate this 2021 vintage represents exceptional quality, even by St Hallett's high standards. These scores reflect the wine's perfect balance of power and sophistication, with critics recognising how the vintage has enhanced the wine's natural complexity. The 'Killer Vintage' designation suggests 2021 was particularly favourable for Barossa Shiraz production.

This full-bodied Barossa Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential thanks to its robust tannin structure and concentrated fruit density. The wine should continue developing complexity for 8-12 years, with the cedar and tobacco notes becoming more pronounced over time. St Hallett's traditional winemaking approach ensures the wine has the backbone to age gracefully while maintaining its characteristic bold, imposing style.

The wine's rich chocolate and earthy characteristics make it ideal for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb, grilled ribeye, or venison with juniper berries. The cedar and tobacco notes pair beautifully with aged hard cheeses or charcuterie featuring smoked meats. For vegetarian options, try it with mushroom-based dishes or roasted root vegetables that echo the wine's earthy complexity and full-bodied nature.
