Why do we love this wine?

Assuredly among the most decorated producers of the Barossa Valley. St Hallets produce absolute classics vintage after vintage. This is no exception. This is regionally perfect; a wine that is so well bound, so perfectly in balance, that it's found harmony in its relative youth and will strive confidently into the next decade. The American oak is present on the palate giving a lusciousness to the mouthfeel that marries so well with the prominence of the fruit. If you're wondering what ultra-premium fruit can look like in the hands of Australia's best producers... well, it looks a lot like this.

James Halliday

Super-deep crimson in the glass with inviting aromas of macerated plum, blackberry, boysenberry and blueberry fruits. Hints of fruit cake spice, licorice, dark chocolate, turned earth, violets, olive tapenade, vanillin oak panforte and roasting meats. It's a classic Barossan style and one that St Hallett does very well, consistently dealing out great examples of what made the region famous across the world. Plush and endearing with superfine powdery tannins and a black-fruited finish that lingers nicely, showing abundant spice and meaty, earthy nuance. You can see why these wines are so well supported, especially so from a vintage as strong as 2021.

Frequently Asked Questions

The St Hallett Blackwell Shiraz represents the pinnacle of Barossa winemaking, showcasing how ultra-premium fruit performs under expert handling. Its exceptional balance between American oak integration and fruit prominence creates a wine that achieves harmony in its youth while promising confident development over the next decade. The dual 95-point ratings from James Halliday and The Real Review confirm its status among Australia's finest expressions of the variety.

The American oak treatment adds a distinctive lusciousness to the mouthfeel that perfectly complements the wine's prominent fruit character. Unlike French oak which tends to add more subtle spice notes, American oak contributes vanilla, coconut, and sweet spice elements that marry beautifully with Shiraz's natural blackberry and chocolate flavours. This oak integration demonstrates St Hallett's mastery in balancing wood influence with varietal expression.

This rich, full-bodied Shiraz with its blackberry, chocolate, and spice profile pairs magnificently with robust dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or game meats. The wine's American oak influence and luxurious mouthfeel also complement barbecued meats and dishes with smoky or charred elements. For cheese pairings, consider aged cheddar or blue cheese to match the wine's intensity and complexity.

While this Shiraz has achieved remarkable balance and harmony in its youth, making it thoroughly enjoyable now, it's built for confident development over the next decade. The wine's structure and quality fruit suggest it will evolve beautifully through 2031 and potentially beyond. St Hallett's consistent track record of producing age-worthy wines, combined with the 2021's exceptional ratings, indicates this vintage will reward patient cellaring with increased complexity and integration.

St Hallett is recognised as one of the Barossa Valley's most decorated producers, earning a Five Red Star rating from James Halliday - the highest accolade for Australian wineries. Their consistent ability to produce 'absolute classics vintage after vintage' stems from their deep understanding of Barossa terroir and commitment to showcasing what ultra-premium fruit can achieve. This Blackwell Shiraz exemplifies their philosophy of creating regionally perfect wines that express the true character of their exceptional vineyard sites.
