Put simply, this wine is *flawless*. Say what you want about reviews, but when a wine has been so overwhelmingly well-received, it's hard to deny that they must be onto something. A genuine collectors item, the centrepiece of any good cellar.

Why do we love this wine?

Six generations of Hampel's have farmed grapes from this family vineyard in the northern grounds of the Barossa. It's this generational knowhow that allows the creation of, what can only be described as, an instinctual wine. It feels effortless, as if no conscious decisions were made throughout the production, rather the wine just sort of happened into existence in the perfect place, at the perfect time. Plush dark fruits, dark chocolate, roasted nuts and marzipan aromas make way for an intense palate of blackberries, cedar, roasted chestnuts and super-fine chalky tannins. The finish is genuinely something to behold, a sip of this at lunch will be perfect if you're having steak for dinner - you'll still be tasting it. In fact, with the aging potential of this beauty, 20 years (or more) will go on and it'll still be singing.

The Vintage Journal, Barossa Guide 2023

Deep crimson. Intense dark berry, dark chocolate, roasted chestnut, marzipan aromas. Beautifully balanced blackberry pastille, cassis roasted chestnut, marzipan nutmeg flavours, supple fine chalky tannins, lovely mid-palate richness / viscosity and well integrated acidity. Wonderful complexity, density and freshness. A classic vintage. 99 Points. - The Vintage Journal, Barossa Guide 2023

Halliday

Shiraz sourced from the Hampel family vineyard in the northern grounds of the Barossa Valley where they have farmed grapes for six generations. Super-plush satsuma plum and blackberry fruits underscored by hints of baking spices, cedar, crème de cassis, violets, roasting meats, olive tapenade, chocolate bullets and earth. A core of deep northern Barossa black fruits on the palate with chocolate-dipped cherry overtones, fine chocolatey tannins and a crashing swell of cassis fruit on the long finish. Impressive. - Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion

Wine Advocate

A profusion of sweet fruit emanates from the glass of this 2021 Hampel Single Vineyard Shiraz, offering up sugar-dusted raspberries, rose petals, cassis, red toffee apples, rhubarb spears, strawberries and wine gums. In the mouth, the exotically spiced oak steps up to the plate and makes itself felt, however the fruit has such unerring power and drive that it doesn't impact it one jot. This has a silky, sybaritic display of forest fruits and opulent tannins; it's a wine built for pleasure not speed. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. 95 Points. - Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine represents six generations of the Hampel family's accumulated knowledge and intuitive winemaking approach on their northern Barossa vineyard. The generational expertise creates what's described as an 'instinctual wine' that feels effortless yet perfectly crafted. Its exceptional quality is reflected in outstanding ratings including 99 points from The Vintage Journal and 96 points from Halliday Wine Companion, placing it among the elite tier of Australian Shiraz.

This Shiraz has remarkable aging potential of 20 years or more, making it an excellent candidate for long-term cellaring. The 2021 vintage is drinking beautifully now but will continue to develop complexity over the next two decades. The wine's structure, with super-fine chalky tannins and intense fruit concentration, provides the backbone necessary for extended aging while maintaining its vibrant character.

This wine's rich profile of dark fruits, chocolate, and roasted nuts makes it perfect for hearty red meat dishes, particularly grilled or roasted beef and lamb. The meaty characteristics and chalky tannins complement barbecued steaks, slow-cooked beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses. Its remarkable finish length means it pairs beautifully with dishes that have complex, lingering flavours like game meats or rich mushroom-based dishes.

Single vineyard wines like this Hampel Shiraz are produced in extremely small quantities to maintain exclusivity and quality. The limited production reflects the boutique nature of the specific vineyard block and the meticulous winemaking approach that prioritises quality over quantity. This scarcity, combined with its exceptional ratings and aging potential, makes it a highly sought-after collector's item among serious wine enthusiasts.

The 'instinctual' approach suggests minimal intervention winemaking where the Hampel family's generational knowledge guides decisions rather than heavy-handed techniques. This philosophy allows the vineyard's terroir and the fruit's natural characteristics to shine through, creating a wine that feels authentic and true to place. The result is a Shiraz that expresses the unique northern Barossa conditions while showcasing the family's deep understanding of their land and vines.
