Aged for 36 months in 50% new French oak - there's no denying it, this is a big boy. That said, we're talking about Sorby Adams here, there's more to this wine than super-premium oak treatment. There's an opulence and generosity here that takes it to the next level and would see this one live for 15+ years in the cellar - easy.

Why do we love this wine?

Behind the wine is Simon Sorby Adams, carrying the legacy of four generations of winemaking heritage, dating back to Reverend Augustus Crichton Adams, 'The Vicar', and Anne Sorby. With a name steeped in tradition and a wine packed with pedigree, this is a Barossa shiraz that commands attention. This is pure Barossa power, an unapologetically bold shiraz from the northern grounds of the region, where the fruit grows darker, richer, and more intense. It opens with a heady mix of ripe black fruits, spiced plum and dark chocolate. As the wine opens up, it's all about concentration: blackcurrant, cocoa and vanilla stacked on top of exotic spice and firm, muscular tannins. Aged for 36 months in premium French oak (half of it new, from tight-grain Francois Frere and Taransaud hogsheads), it’s got serious structure and finesse beneath all that fruit weight. Full-bodied, finely tuned and built for the long haul - this is one to cellar confidently through to 2036.

"Offering power and refinement, the wine shows blackberry, toasty oak, star anise, rich floral, and dark chocolate notes on the nose. The sumptuous palate offers plush texture and silky flow, wonderfully enhanced by beautifully melded tannins, making it robust and captivating with a prolonged, sophisticated finish. At its best: now to 2040. 96 Points." - Wine Orbit

Frequently Asked Questions

The Vicar represents the northern Barossa's distinctive terroir, where extreme heat and ancient soils produce fruit with exceptional concentration and power. The 36-month maturation in premium French oak from renowned cooperages like Francois Frere creates a wine with remarkable structure that balances raw Barossa intensity with European finesse. This extended oak ageing is significantly longer than most Australian reds, resulting in a wine that showcases both regional character and winemaking sophistication.

With its muscular tannin structure and concentrated fruit profile, The Vicar 2021 is built for extended cellaring until 2036, giving you 15 years of evolution potential. The wine's full-bodied nature and premium oak treatment suggest it will develop complex secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and earthy notes over the next 5-8 years. Peak drinking will likely occur between 2028-2034, when the powerful tannins fully integrate with the rich fruit core.

The wine's bold structure and dark chocolate notes make it perfect for rich, protein-heavy dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked beef brisket, lamb shanks with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The exotic spice elements and firm tannins also complement game meats like venison or duck, while the vanilla oak notes pair beautifully with barbecued meats where caramelisation echoes the wine's oak influence.

The exceptional 97-point rating from Ray Jordan and 96 points from Wine Orbit indicate this is an outstanding expression of both the 2021 vintage and Sorby Adams' winemaking prowess. These scores place it among Australia's elite Shiraz releases, suggesting the 2021 vintage delivered ideal ripening conditions in the Barossa. Such high ratings typically reflect perfect balance between fruit concentration, oak integration, and structural elements that promise excellent ageing potential.

Simon Sorby Adams represents four generations of winemaking knowledge, tracing back to Reverend Augustus Crichton Adams, providing deep understanding of Barossa terroir and traditional techniques. This generational expertise is evident in the wine's sophisticated oak program and precise fruit selection from northern Barossa vineyards. The family's long-term commitment to the region means access to premium vineyard sites and relationships with top cooperages, resulting in wines that express both heritage craftsmanship and modern precision.
