Why do we love this wine?

If we’re honest, there’s not a single reason that we don’t love Sidewood. They’re far from being one-trick ponies (although everyone can find a favourite in their range). Whether it be sensational sparkling, succulent sauvignon blanc, perfect pinot noir, or shining chardonnay. This time, the spotlight is on the shiraz. Selected fruit, estate crafted, 100% french oak treatment through fermentation and 15 months maturation, before final barrel selection is undergone. No stone left unturned, no drop of wine slips by without quality assured. To simply say this overdelivers doesn’t do it justice: this excels in its own category and ones above.

Frequently Asked Questions

This shiraz showcases the cooler climate elegance that Adelaide Hills is renowned for, delivering a medium-bodied style that's more refined than typical warm-climate shiraz. The 100% French oak treatment through fermentation and 15 months maturation creates exceptional complexity, while the estate's meticulous barrel selection process ensures only the finest wine makes it to bottle. The textured, savoury profile reflects the region's ability to produce shiraz with finesse rather than power.

The 100% French oak treatment is applied during both fermentation and the 15-month maturation period, creating layers of complexity beyond simple oak flavouring. French oak imparts subtle vanilla and spice notes while allowing the blackberry fruit to shine through, contributing to the wine's textured mouthfeel. This extended oak contact also helps integrate tannins and adds structural backbone, explaining why this wine excels in its category and punches above its weight.

The impressive collection of gold medals from international competitions like New York International Wine Competition and Mundus Vini, plus the exceptional 96 points from Winestate Magazine, demonstrates consistent recognition across different judging panels and palates. This level of acclaim is rare for wines at this price point and validates the producer's claim that it 'excels in its own category and ones above'. The diversity of awards from different countries also suggests the wine has broad international appeal.

While this 2020 shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its integrated oak and developed blackberry and spice flavours, Adelaide Hills shiraz typically has excellent cellaring potential due to the region's natural acidity and structured tannins. The French oak maturation and careful barrel selection suggest this wine has the backbone to evolve gracefully over 8-12 years, developing more complex savoury notes while maintaining its elegant, medium-bodied character.

The medium-bodied, textured profile makes this shiraz incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that complement its savoury character and blackberry fruit. Think roasted lamb with herbs, grilled portobello mushrooms, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's spice notes can shine. The French oak integration also makes it excellent with char-grilled meats or rich pasta dishes with mushroom-based sauces, where the wine's complexity won't be overwhelmed.
