Why do we love this wine?

At its core, we have all the plush dark berries, plums and chocolatey goodness that you’d expect from Mclaren Vale. But the blend of cabernets is what lifts this drop way above entry level, firm tannins and a liveliness on the back palate provide wonderful length and serious structure; perfect to pair with your good old fashioned Sunday roast lamb with all the trimmings.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

While the core delivers classic McLaren Vale characteristics of dark berries and chocolate, the addition of Cabernet varieties elevates this wine significantly above entry-level offerings. The Cabernet component contributes firm tannins and structural backbone that provides exceptional length and complexity on the palate. This blending technique is a hallmark of premium Australian winemaking, where Shiraz's fruit-forward nature is balanced by Cabernet's structural elements.

Receiving dual 95-point scores from both Wine Showcase and Wine Orbit is exceptional, as these publications rarely align on such high ratings unless the wine demonstrates outstanding quality. These scores place this 2021 vintage in the top tier of Australian red wines, particularly impressive for a McLaren Vale blend. The consistency across multiple respected critics suggests this wine successfully balances power with finesse, a challenging feat in full-bodied Australian reds.

The 2021 vintage in McLaren Vale benefited from ideal growing conditions that produced wines with exceptional concentration and balance. This particular year allowed winemakers to achieve optimal ripeness while maintaining natural acidity, resulting in wines with both power and elegance. The 'Killer Vintage' designation reflects how environmental factors aligned perfectly with the vineyard's terroir, creating wines that will age gracefully while drinking beautifully in their youth.

The wine's full-bodied structure and firm tannins make it ideal for rich, protein-heavy dishes that can stand up to its intensity. Consider pairing with aged hard cheeses, grilled portobello mushrooms, or slow-cooked beef brisket with dark jus. The chocolate and allspice notes also complement game meats like venison or duck, while the black cherry characteristics work beautifully with barbecued lamb chops or char-grilled kangaroo.

Given the structural integrity from the Cabernet blend and the wine's full-bodied nature, this 2021 vintage has excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years. The firm tannins will gradually soften while the fruit flavours evolve from primary berry notes to more complex secondary characteristics. Peak drinking will likely occur between 2026-2030, though the wine's current balance means it's also drinking beautifully now for those who prefer more vibrant fruit expression.
