It’s safe to say this wine is a ‘shoe-in’. Multiple vintages of this exact vino have rushed into our warehouse and zoomed straight back out and to your front door faster than you can say ‘shiraz blended with cab sav and a splash of cab franc’

Why do we love this wine?

At its core, we have all the plush dark berries, plums and chocolatey goodness that you’d expect from Mclaren Vale. But the blend of cabernets is what lifts this drop way above entry level, firm tannins and a liveliness on the back palate provide wonderful length and serious structure; perfect to pair with your good old fashioned Sunday roast lamb with all the trimmings.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

While the foundation is classic McLaren Vale Shiraz with its signature dark berries and chocolate notes, the addition of Cabernet varieties transforms the wine's structure completely. The Cabernet component introduces firm tannins and a distinctive liveliness on the back palate that extends the finish significantly. This blending technique is common in premium Australian reds, where Cabernet's structural backbone complements Shiraz's fruit-forward nature, creating a wine that ages more gracefully than single varietals.

The 2021 vintage in McLaren Vale benefited from ideal growing conditions that produced concentrated fruit with excellent natural acidity. The dual 95-point scores from Wine Showcase and Wine Orbit, plus the Gold Medal recognition, reflect the wine's exceptional balance between power and finesse. These accolades are particularly significant because they come from different judging panels, indicating consistent quality that impressed critics with varying palate preferences and evaluation criteria.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C and decant it 30-60 minutes before drinking to allow the firm tannins to soften and the complex aromatics to develop. The wine's structure and weight make it ideal for rich, protein-heavy dishes where its tannins can cut through fat and complement savoury flavours. Given its McLaren Vale pedigree and Cabernet influence, it will continue developing in the bottle for 5-8 years if stored properly.

The wine's chocolate and allspice notes make it excellent with game meats like venison or duck, while the black cherry fruit complements aged cheeses beautifully. The firm tannin structure also pairs wonderfully with barbecued meats, particularly those with smoky or spiced rubs that echo the wine's allspice character. For vegetarian options, try it with mushroom-based dishes or grilled eggplant where the earthy flavours won't compete with the wine's complexity.

Black Market Deals typically represent exceptional value wines where the producer prefers to remain anonymous, often due to existing retail relationships or brand positioning strategies. This anonymity allows established wineries to offer premium quality wines at significantly reduced prices without affecting their regular market pricing. The Five Red Star Halliday rating confirms this comes from a top-tier winery, making it an insider's opportunity to access premium McLaren Vale wine at a fraction of its usual cost.
