Why do we love this wine?

Every vintage, this Barossa powerhouse grades their absolute best fruit and secret it away to create this, their flagship wine. The 2022 release, an almost even blend of shiraz and cabernet, has been produced in a style the winemaker describes as ‘a steel hand in a velvet glove’. It’s silky-smooth, but with an otherworldly force behind it. Simply put, for lovers of big, bold Barossa reds, this has it all. The nose exhibits violets, olive tapenade and dark sweet fruits. There’s plum, blackcurrant, cedar and spice on the substantial palate, leading to a finish that just goes on and on. You couldn’t pack much more flavour and concentration into a wine than we have here. Liquid gold.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine represents the absolute pinnacle of what this Barossa powerhouse can achieve, crafted exclusively from their finest graded fruit that's been specially reserved for their flagship release. The winemaker's philosophy of creating 'a steel hand in a velvet glove' perfectly captures the Barossa's ability to produce wines that are both powerful and elegant. With 97 points from Wine Orbit, it demonstrates how exceptional fruit selection and masterful winemaking can elevate a regional blend to world-class status.

The almost even split between shiraz and cabernet sauvignon creates a fascinating interplay where shiraz contributes the signature Barossa power, dark fruit intensity, and spice, while cabernet adds structural backbone, cedar notes, and that remarkable finish that 'goes on and on'. This balanced approach allows both varietals to shine without one dominating the other, resulting in greater complexity than either grape could achieve alone. The blend showcases why Australia's best winemakers often favour this classic combination for their premium releases.

Given its substantial palate weight and rich flavour profile featuring blackcurrant, dark chocolate, and tobacco notes, this wine demands equally robust cuisine. Think slow-cooked beef brisket, grilled lamb with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar or pecorino. The wine's olive tapenade characteristics also make it excellent with Mediterranean dishes featuring olives, herbs, and grilled meats. The concentrated fruit and spice elements can even handle barbecued meats with bold, smoky flavours.

Store this premium Barossa blend in a cool, dark place at 12-15°C to preserve its complex aromatics and concentrated flavours. Serve at 16-18°C to allow the full-bodied character to express itself properly - too cold and you'll mute the beautiful violet and dark fruit aromas. Decant for at least 30 minutes before serving to help integrate the substantial tannins and unlock the wine's full potential. Given its exceptional concentration and structure, this wine has excellent cellaring potential for 8-12 years.

The 'liquid gold' descriptor reflects not just the wine's premium positioning, but its extraordinary concentration and flavour density that's rarely achieved even in top-tier Australian reds. This level of intensity comes from meticulous fruit selection, low yields, and optimal vintage conditions that allow maximum flavour development. The description aligns with the 97-point rating, indicating a wine that delivers exceptional value and drinking experience. Such concentrated, complex wines represent the pinnacle of what modern Australian winemaking can achieve.
