Smooth, bold, rich and ripe. A classically Australian shiraz blend. Shiraz and cabernet just work together, there's a reason why Penfold's Grange heroes this mighty combo...

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This wine is described by the producer as “Shiraz et al”, but don’t get the wrong idea, this is still the Barossa. This is pretty much a shiraz/cabernet blend with all the boldness and palate weight you’d expect from the region. In the style of the classic Australian “dry reds” of yesteryear, this is a structured wine with gorgeously ripe fruit, lingering tannins and a smooth, oak driven finish. The shiraz and cabernet compliment each other perfectly and create a full-bodied wine with blackberry, dark cherry, and chocolatey oak. One for fans of all South Australian reds.

Frequently Asked Questions

The addition of cabernet sauvignon to the shiraz creates a more structured wine with enhanced tannin backbone and complexity. While shiraz brings the signature spice and dark fruit intensity that Barossa is famous for, the cabernet contributes cassis notes and firmer structure, resulting in a wine that's both powerful and elegant. This classic Australian blend style was popularised in the region decades ago and remains a benchmark for full-bodied reds.

The 2021 vintage in Barossa was marked by excellent ripening conditions that allowed for optimal flavour development while maintaining natural acidity. This translates to a wine with intense fruit concentration and well-integrated tannins that are already showing beautifully but have the structure to develop further. The vintage's quality is reflected in the wine's rich blackberry and dark cherry profile, supported by that signature chocolatey oak integration.

This wine's meaty, spiced character and robust tannin structure make it perfect for grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with pepper crusts. The wine's weight and complexity also complement rich, slow-cooked dishes like braised short ribs or hearty stews. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese, as the wine's fruit intensity can stand up to strong flavours while its tannins cleanse the palate.

While this wine is drinking beautifully now with its ripe fruit and smooth oak integration, its structured tannins and Five Red Star winery pedigree suggest excellent cellaring potential. The 2021 vintage's natural acidity and the blend's inherent structure mean it should develop additional complexity over the next 5-8 years. If cellaring, store in a cool, dark place and expect the wine to develop more savoury, earthy notes while the fruit becomes more integrated.

James Halliday's Five Red Star rating system represents the pinnacle of Australian winery recognition, awarded only to producers consistently making wines of exceptional quality. This rating indicates the winery has a proven track record of excellence across their range, not just individual wines. The 90-point score for this specific wine places it in the 'outstanding' category, suggesting it represents excellent value and quality within the premium Australian red wine segment.
