The 2023 vintage was exceptionally cool and dry, allowing the shiraz grapes to hang on the vine much longer than usual without becoming overripe. This extended hang time built extraordinary layers of flavour and fruit concentration, resulting in the latest harvest this Barossa winemaker had ever experienced. The cool conditions preserved the wine's natural acidity and structure while maximising flavour development.

The dual 96-point scores from Sam Kim and Kim Brebach reflect the exceptional quality achieved through meticulous winemaking and ideal vintage conditions. The combination of 80-year-old vines from Seppeltsfield, wild fermentation, and careful oak maturation (18 months in a mix of new American puncheons and seasoned French oak) creates remarkable complexity. Single vineyard wines from boutique producers often achieve these premium scores due to their focused terroir expression and limited production attention to detail.

This full-bodied Shiraz offers two distinct experiences - decant it now for an 'otherworldly' immediate drinking experience, or cellar it for further development. The wine's structure from the cool vintage, combined with quality oak maturation and natural acidity, suggests excellent ageing potential. Barossa Shiraz from established vineyards typically peaks between 8-15 years, so patience will likely be richly rewarded with increased complexity and integration.

Old vines produce significantly lower yields but dramatically higher quality fruit, with deeper root systems accessing unique mineral profiles from the Seppeltsfield terroir. These mature vines naturally regulate their crop load, concentrating flavours into fewer, more intensely flavoured berries. The hands-off approach begins with cool morning handpicking to preserve fruit integrity, followed by partial whole bunch fermentation for lifted aromatics. Wild fermentation after cold soaking allows indigenous yeasts to express the vineyard's unique character, while the long, cool ferment preserved every flavour detail. The 18-month oak regime using both American puncheons and French barrels adds complementary spice and structure without overwhelming the concentrated plum and dark chocolate fruit flavours.
