This shiraz genuinely punches well above its weight - especially when you take into account the name on the label - delivering quality and complexity you'd expect from wines commanding significantly higher prices. It's got power, finesse and approachability, meaning you can geek out analysing all the layers or just pour generously and enjoy without overthinking.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Vibrant, polished McLaren Vale shiraz crafted with estate-grown fruit sourced from two of this producer's most famous vineyards. 9 months in seasoned American (70%) and French (30%) oak brings a bit of grunt whilst retaining fruit purity. Ripe dark plum and spice aromas leading to a generous, structured palate - juicy black fruit, subtle peppery notes, a plush texture and fine supple tannins stretching to lingering finish. Store or pour - up to you - this one will be sitting pretty from now until 2030!

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale is renowned for producing some of Australia's most powerful and expressive Shiraz, benefiting from its Mediterranean climate and diverse soil types including sand, clay, and ironstone. This particular wine showcases the region's signature style with its generous, structured palate and ability to balance power with elegance. The estate-grown fruit from two famous vineyards ensures consistent quality and terroir expression that McLaren Vale is celebrated for worldwide.

The 9-month maturation in a blend of 70% seasoned American oak and 30% French oak creates a sophisticated flavour framework. American oak contributes vanilla sweetness and coconut notes while adding 'grunt' or structural backbone, whilst French oak provides subtle spice complexity and refined tannin integration. The use of seasoned rather than new oak ensures the fruit purity remains the star, preventing the wine from becoming overly woody or dominated by oak flavours.

This rich, full-bodied Shiraz with its blackberry and plum fruit, peppery spice, and structured tannins pairs beautifully with robust dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked braised meats. The wine's generous palate and fine tannins also complement aged cheeses, barbecued sausages, and hearty pasta dishes with rich tomato-based sauces. The peppery notes make it particularly suited to dishes with herbs like rosemary or thyme.

This versatile Shiraz offers the best of both worlds - it's delicious now with its vibrant fruit and polished structure, yet has excellent cellaring potential until 2030. Drinking it young showcases the fresh blackberry and plum flavours, whilst cellaring will allow the tannins to soften further and develop more complex secondary flavours like leather, tobacco, and earthy notes. The wine's balance suggests it will gracefully evolve over the next 6-8 years.

The combination of 'Five Red Star Halliday Rated Producer' and 'Iconic Producer' status indicates this winery is among Australia's elite, consistently producing wines of exceptional quality and character. James Halliday's five red star rating is reserved for producers who demonstrate outstanding winemaking across their entire range, not just individual wines. The 'Estate Grown' designation adds another layer of quality assurance, showing complete control from vineyard to bottle, which typically results in more authentic terroir expression.
