This producer does things a little differently than the rest of McLaren Vale. Surprisingly this is the first shiraz release since 2016 - these guys only make the Vale's favourite red when conditions are perfect (by their own lofty standards). With 95pts and a gold medal from the McLaren Vale Wine Show, this was certainly worth the wait.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Deep, dark and savoury. The fruit manages to be both ripe and vibrant, this isn't an overly-sweet fruit bomb, whilst the tannins and natural acidity create a subtle yet firm structure that carries on right through the lengthy finish. You wouldn't find many wineries in McLaren Vale that only release a shiraz every 5 years... the reason is simple, quality. If the winemaker doesn't think that the fruit is up to scratch then he'll pass on it. Well, it turns out 2022 was just too good a vintage to pass up - thank goodness for that! This is a classic McLaren Vale shiraz, made by a producer with their finger right on the pulse of modern McLaren Vale wines.

Frequently Asked Questions

This producer follows an uncompromising quality-first philosophy, only releasing Shiraz when the vintage meets their exacting standards. Many McLaren Vale wineries release annually regardless of conditions, but this approach ensures each bottle represents the absolute best expression of their terroir. The 2022 vintage was so exceptional that the winemaker couldn't pass it up, making this release particularly special for collectors and enthusiasts.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for Shiraz, allowing the variety to develop intense flavours while maintaining natural acidity. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, preventing over-ripeness while encouraging the development of complex tannin structures. This wine exemplifies modern McLaren Vale style - balancing power with elegance, avoiding the overly sweet fruit bomb approach that can plague warmer climate regions.

These flavour compounds emerge through a combination of grape ripeness, fermentation techniques, and oak treatment. Mulberry and plum notes come from the grape's natural anthocyanins and phenolic compounds, while chocolate characteristics often develop through malolactic fermentation and careful oak integration. The full-bodied nature of this wine suggests extended skin contact during fermentation, which extracts these rich, dark fruit flavours while building the wine's substantial tannin backbone.

These prestigious scores (95pts and 94pts respectively) reflect exceptional winemaking and vintage conditions, placing this wine in the top tier of Australian Shiraz. The McLaren Vale Wine Show rating is particularly significant as it's judged by regional experts who understand the terroir intimately. Such high scores typically indicate perfect balance between fruit intensity, structural elements, and ageing potential - suggesting this wine will develop beautifully over the next decade.

Serve at 16-18°C in large bowled glasses to allow the complex aromatics to develop fully. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help integrate the firm tannins and reveal the wine's savoury complexity. The substantial structure makes it perfect for rich dishes like braised lamb, aged beef, or strong cheeses. Given its quality and the producer's selective release pattern, this wine has excellent cellaring potential for 8-12 years.
