Why do we love this wine?

Not only does this beauty stand out amongst its direct contemporaries, Gold - Hunter Valley Wine Show, Gold - NSW Wine Awards, but also in the scheme of the wider Australian wine industry, 95pts - Halliday Wine Companion. Beautifully ripe red and dark fruits, think dark cherry, raspberry and blackberry, are enhanced, but not overpowered, by subtle vanilla and hints of spice born of a stint aging in French oak barrels. Initially approachable but with a serious core that bodes very well for future enjoyment, if that's your thing. Produced by the team at the oldest wine brand in Australia, dating back nearly 200 years, it's no wonder they've got it all figured out by now.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz represents the pinnacle of Hunter Valley winemaking, earning an exceptional 95 points from James Halliday and multiple gold medals. The Hunter Valley's warm climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for Shiraz, allowing the grapes to develop intense fruit concentration while maintaining the region's signature elegance. The winery's nearly 200-year heritage means they've mastered the art of balancing power with finesse, creating a wine that showcases both immediate appeal and serious ageing potential.

The French oak treatment adds sophisticated layers without overwhelming the fruit's natural character. French oak is prized for its tight grain and subtle tannin contribution, imparting gentle vanilla notes and warming spices that complement rather than dominate the dark cherry, raspberry and blackberry flavours. This careful oak integration is a hallmark of premium Australian Shiraz, creating complexity while preserving the wine's varietal integrity and regional expression.

This Shiraz offers the best of both worlds - it's beautifully approachable now with its ripe fruit flavours and integrated oak, making it perfect for immediate enjoyment. However, the wine's 'serious core' and full-bodied structure indicate excellent cellaring potential, likely improving over the next 8-12 years. The tannin backbone and acidity will allow the wine to develop more complex secondary flavours while the fruit remains vibrant.

The wine's rich fruit profile and full body make it an excellent match for robust dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked game meats. The dark berry flavours and subtle spice notes also complement barbecued meats beautifully, while the French oak influence pairs wonderfully with aged cheeses and mushroom-based dishes. The wine's structure can handle bold flavours and rich sauces without being overwhelmed.

The Special Value Award from Halliday Wine Companion recognises wines that deliver exceptional quality relative to their price point, making this Shiraz a standout bargain in the premium wine category. This accolade, combined with the 95-point rating, indicates the wine punches well above its weight class, offering the complexity and craftsmanship typically found in much more expensive bottles. It's recognition that serious wine lovers can access outstanding quality without breaking the bank.
