The best of both worlds. All the big, bold, brash Barossa that you're used to, but with a point of difference: elegance. A smooth, slippery, silky, shiraz that absolutely still packs a punch.

Why do we love this wine?

From a steep hillside vineyard, about 5kms north of the Lyndoch township, this full-bodied shiraz displays intricate and complex layers of black pepper, spice, dark chocolate and ripe blackberries and plums. The smoky cedar notes of the oak and super-fine grained tannins bring a touch of class to your glass and set up a long, velvety finish. Although already very elegantly well-integrated, the bright acidity, presence of the oak and slightly chalky tannin structure set this wine up for a long life in the cellar of anyone who's got the patience.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Angus Brae vineyard sits on a steep hillside about 5km north of Lyndoch in the Barossa Valley, where the elevation and slope create ideal conditions for premium Shiraz. Steep vineyard sites typically offer better drainage, increased sun exposure, and natural stress on vines that concentrates flavours. This challenging terrain forces the vines to work harder, resulting in smaller berries with more intense flavour compounds and the complex spice and pepper notes that make this wine so distinctive.

While this Shiraz is already beautifully integrated and drinking well now, its bright acidity, oak presence, and chalky tannin structure indicate excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years. The 2022 vintage was exceptional in the Barossa, and this wine's full-bodied structure will allow it to develop greater complexity over time. The tannins will soften further, the oak will integrate more seamlessly, and secondary flavours like leather and earth will emerge alongside the primary fruit characters.

This wine's rich blackberry and plum flavours, combined with black pepper spice and smoky cedar notes, make it perfect for robust dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked game meats. The wine's full body and fine-grained tannins can stand up to rich sauces and strong flavours, while the dark chocolate notes complement dishes with earthy mushrooms or aged cheeses. The spice profile also pairs beautifully with barbecued meats and dishes featuring herbs like rosemary and thyme.

A 96-point rating from Wine Orbit places this Shiraz in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that rivals some of Australia's most prestigious wines. Wine Orbit is known for their rigorous tasting standards, and scores above 95 points are reserved for wines showing remarkable complexity, balance, and ageing potential. This rating, combined with Schild Estate's Five Star Halliday winery status, confirms you're getting premium Barossa Shiraz that punches well above its price point.

The 2022 Barossa vintage is being hailed as a 'Killer Vintage' due to ideal growing conditions that produced wines with exceptional concentration and balance. After a challenging 2021 vintage affected by weather issues, 2022 delivered perfect ripening conditions with warm days and cool nights that preserved acidity while developing full flavour maturity. This vintage produced Shiraz with the perfect combination of power and elegance, making wines like this Angus Brae particularly sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts.
