Why do we love this wine?

These guys are one of Heathcote's most respected names, and this might be their very best red wine - organically farmed, single-block fruit from a high-elevation site that coaxes something genuinely special out of the variety. This isn't all about brute force or overly oaked juice. As Jeni Port points out in her 96pt Halliday review - 'this is something altogether more intriguing.' Deep purple in the glass, with violet, black cherry, blueberry and a ferrous, earthy complexity on the nose that immediately signals you're somewhere different. The palate is silky and seamless - juicy and fine-textured, rolling effortlessly from one sip to the next. And then, just when you think you've got it figured out, that unmistakable Heathcote character emerges underneath. A quiet, brooding power that suggests this wine has considerably more to reveal with time (or a good decant).

Frequently Asked Questions

Heathcote's ancient Cambrian soils and elevated sites create a distinctive iron-rich, earthy complexity that sets it apart from warmer regions like Barossa or McLaren Vale. The high-elevation vineyards experience greater diurnal temperature variation, allowing grapes to retain natural acidity while developing intense flavours. This results in Shiraz with a unique 'brooding power' and mineral backbone that's immediately recognisable to experienced tasters.

James Halliday's 96-point rating reflects the wine's exceptional balance between power and finesse, which is rare in full-bodied Shiraz. The organic farming practices and single-block sourcing contribute to remarkable purity of fruit expression. Jeni Port's review specifically praised its 'intriguing' character - a wine that transcends typical Shiraz expectations by combining silky texture with underlying complexity that will continue evolving for years.

While this Shiraz is approachable now, decanting for 1-2 hours will unlock its full potential and reveal the 'brooding power' mentioned in tasting notes. The wine's seamless, fine-textured palate benefits from aeration to integrate the cedar and blood plum flavours fully. Given its 96-point rating and cellar-worthy structure, decanting also helps determine if you want to drink it now or cellar it for further development.

The wine's silky texture and earthy complexity make it perfect for slow-cooked lamb with rosemary, where the cedar notes complement herb flavours beautifully. Rich game meats like venison or duck work exceptionally well, as the blood plum characteristics bridge fruit and savoury elements. For cheese, try aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar or Parmigiano-Reggiano, which echo the wine's mineral complexity without overwhelming its finesse.

Premium Heathcote Shiraz from respected producers like Tellurian typically peaks between 8-15 years from vintage, meaning this 2022 has excellent cellaring potential until 2030-2037. The organic farming and single-block sourcing suggest concentrated fruit that will develop secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and spice over time. Store in a cool, dark place at 12-15°C, and the wine's 'quiet, brooding power' will continue revealing new layers of complexity.
