From a (very) recent Halliday Winery of the Year comes a (96pt) shiraz that basically defined the Hunter Valley, in fact, this producer so synonymous with the region that saying their name and saying "Hunter Valley" are practically the same thing. Classic and contemporary all at once. And at this price, with that score... Genuinely hard to justify walking past it!

Why do we love this wine?

This lot spent decades proving what the Hunter Valley can do, and this wine is another exhibit in a very long list of their achievements. Made from younger vines off their most prized vineyard block, blended with a portion of the good stuff from the older guard. What ends up in the glass is Hunter shiraz at its most charming - medium-to-full-bodied, spicy and smooth, with red plum, crushed mulberry and a gorgeous liquorice thread running through it. There's a touch of vanillin sweetness from the oak, ripe tannins that don't push too hard, and a finish with serious staying power. Even casual Hunter fans are going to need to pick up a case of this - we reckon this might creatre more than a few converts too...

Frequently Asked Questions

Hunter Valley Shiraz is renowned for its distinctive earthy character and medium-to-full body style that sets it apart from the powerhouse Shiraz of Barossa or McLaren Vale. The region's unique terroir produces wines with exceptional spice complexity and a characteristic liquorice thread, as showcased in this 2022 vintage. The Hunter's cooler climate and ancient soils create Shiraz with elegant tannin structure and remarkable ageing potential, making it one of Australia's most food-friendly red wine styles.

The blend of younger vine fruit with older vine material creates a beautifully balanced wine that combines youthful vibrancy with mature complexity. Younger vines contribute fresh red plum flavours and bright acidity, while the older vine component adds depth, concentration and that signature Hunter Valley earthiness. This blending technique is a hallmark of quality winemaking, allowing the producer to craft a wine that's both approachable now and built for cellaring.

A 96-point score from James Halliday represents exceptional quality in the upper echelon of Australian wine ratings. Halliday's scale runs to 100 points, so 96 indicates a wine of outstanding character with minimal flaws and exceptional ageing potential. Combined with the Special Value Award, this suggests remarkable quality-to-price ratio. Halliday's ratings are particularly respected for Australian wines, making this score a strong indicator of both current drinking pleasure and long-term cellaring potential.

The wine's rich red plum and cocoa notes, combined with its spicy character and smooth tannins, make it ideal for hearty meat dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked game. The liquorice thread and vanillin oak complement dishes with herbs like rosemary or thyme, while the wine's full body can stand up to rich sauces and aged cheeses. Its Hunter Valley earthiness also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes and charcuterie.

Hunter Valley Shiraz from quality producers like this typically develops beautifully over 8-15 years, with the 2022 vintage showing excellent structure for medium to long-term cellaring. The combination of ripe tannins, good acidity, and the wine's full-bodied nature suggests it will evolve gracefully, developing more complex secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and dried fruits. While delicious now, patience will be rewarded as the wine integrates and develops greater complexity over the next decade.
