Blue and black fruits, cleverly interwoven French oak and persistent natural tannins, this is what Barossa shiraz is all about. Skilfully balanced, complex and concentrated, we're in love with what this winemaker (consistently) produces.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

The winemaker's mantra of "hand-made, slow and gentle" seemingly belies the power and grunt of the wines he creates, year-in year-out. Our shiraz at hand has been harvested from the family-owned and operated vineyards of Marananga. These vineyards sit entirely within the famed western sub-region of the Barossa , and are known Australia-wide for superb Shiraz production and deep, rich soils interspersed with the occasional limestone slab. This is the first vintage made in the brand-spanking new, state of the art, winery and we agree with Peter Nixon, of the Wine Libertine, that this might just be "the finest [Black Market] Shiraz release to date".

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz comes from the prestigious Marananga sub-region of the Barossa, renowned for its deep, rich soils interspersed with limestone slabs that impart unique mineral complexity. The vineyard's family-owned status ensures meticulous attention to detail, while the 'hand-made, slow and gentle' winemaking philosophy creates wines with remarkable power and finesse. This is also the inaugural vintage from their brand-new, state-of-the-art winery, marking a significant milestone in the producer's evolution.

The blackberry provides the wine's fruit foundation with rich, concentrated dark berry intensity typical of premium Barossa Shiraz. Dark chocolate notes emerge from the wine's full-bodied structure and likely oak integration, adding depth and sophistication to the palate. The mocha flavours bridge the fruit and chocolate elements, creating a seamless progression that showcases the wine's complexity while maintaining the bold, powerful character that Barossa Shiraz is celebrated for worldwide.

The dual 96-point scores from Decanter and Peter Dixon reflect exceptional winemaking quality and the outstanding 2022 vintage conditions in the Barossa. Peter Nixon from Wine Libertine called it potentially 'the finest Black Market Shiraz release to date', indicating this wine represents a pinnacle achievement for the producer. The combination of premium Marananga fruit, new winery technology, and traditional gentle winemaking techniques has created a wine that balances power with elegance - a hallmark of truly great Shiraz.

Full-bodied indicates this Shiraz has substantial weight, concentration, and alcohol content that fills your palate completely, typical of premium Barossa wines. The rich, powerful structure means it can handle robust foods like grilled meats, aged cheeses, or rich stews without being overwhelmed. Serve at 16-18°C and consider decanting for 30-60 minutes to allow the complex flavours to fully express themselves, particularly given the wine's youth and intensity.

While this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its rich blackberry and mocha characteristics fully developed, its full-bodied structure and premium Barossa pedigree suggest excellent cellaring potential. The 2022 vintage is noted as a 'Killer Vintage', indicating exceptional growing conditions that typically produce wines with both immediate appeal and long-term aging ability. You can enjoy it immediately for its vibrant fruit expression, or cellar it for 8-15 years to develop more complex tertiary flavours and softer tannins.
