Exquisitely aromatic, with a silky palate of rich berries and chocolate. Delicious. This producer is known for impeccable shiraz from some of the region's oldest vines.

Why do we love this wine?

Low yielding vines were picked and carefully sorted in the winery, with some whole-bunch character (think violets, kirsch, blueberries) really adding to the powerful aromatics. The palate speaks of this quality fruit, it seems to glide with ease, coating your mouth with fine tannins and a mix of blackberry, mulberry, chocolate, clove, baking spice, and tobacco leaf all coming out to play. If there's a producer we know is capable of making such an incredible wine, it's definitely this crew. This is a premium bottle of wine you cannot miss.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the exceptional quality of the 2022 vintage through meticulous vineyard management and low-yielding vines that concentrate flavour intensity. The inclusion of whole-bunch fermentation adds distinctive violet and kirsch aromatics that elevate it beyond typical Barossa Shiraz expressions. With multiple 95+ point ratings from respected critics, it represents the pinnacle of what this renowned region can produce in ideal growing conditions.

Whole-bunch fermentation introduces stems during the winemaking process, which contributes the distinctive violet, kirsch, and blueberry aromatics mentioned in this wine's profile. This technique adds structural complexity and a lifted, perfumed quality that contrasts beautifully with the rich blackberry and chocolate core. It's a sophisticated approach that requires skill to balance, as the stems can add both elegance and potential herbaceous notes if not managed properly.

The wine's rich blackberry and chocolate flavours, combined with tobacco leaf and baking spice notes, make it ideal for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb shoulder, aged beef steaks, or game meats. The fine tannin structure and full body can stand up to strong cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese. For a regional pairing, consider traditional Australian barbecue or meat pies, which echo the wine's bold, satisfying character.

Black Market Deals typically feature premium wines from established producers who prefer to remain anonymous while offering exceptional value. The impressive ratings (96 points Wine Orbit, multiple 95-point scores) and Five Star Halliday winery status suggest this comes from a top-tier Barossa producer. This anonymity allows wine lovers to access premium quality at prices below what the wine would normally command with the producer's name attached.

Given its full-bodied structure, fine tannins, and complex flavour development, this Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years from vintage. The 2022 vintage's natural acidity and the wine's tobacco and spice complexity suggest it will develop beautifully over time, with primary fruit flavours evolving into more savoury, earthy characteristics. However, its current balance and approachable tannins mean it's also drinking beautifully now for those who prefer immediate gratification.
