This is by far this producer's top-selling shiraz, and it's easy to see why. This is a helluva lot of wine for the price! A rich nose bursting with cherry ripe, ripe damsen plums, and a touch of eucalyptus to freshen it up. The palate is so devilishly moreish - mirroring the nose with firm tannins and driving acidity that balance the rounded, rich palate.

Why do we love this wine?

Here we have a single vineyard vino from the McLaren Vale that just does everything right. Definitely a ‘treat yourself’ kind of wine. It’s opulence you can enjoy to yourself at home without feeling guilty for breaking the bank. Devilishly ripe fruit is wrapped in an ermine coat of French oak that feels like the royal treatment. Berry conserve, juicy plums and explosive blueberries balance wonderfully with the smoky-cedary oak frame. There’s a good bit of tannin, but the richness of the fruit means they don’t stick out unduly. You can certainly put it down to age, but I’d put money that not many will be able to resist. Without corks to contend with, wine this good is just a twist away.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for Shiraz to develop intense fruit concentration. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby coast help retain acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness. This terroir produces the devilishly ripe fruit character and natural richness that makes this single vineyard expression so compelling without needing heavy-handed winemaking.

The French oak acts like an 'ermine coat' around the fruit, adding smoky-cedary notes that complement rather than dominate the berry conserve and plum flavours. French oak is prized for its tight grain and subtle tannin contribution, which integrates more elegantly than American oak. This creates the luxurious mouthfeel and adds complexity while allowing the explosive blueberry and chocolate notes to shine through.

While this full-bodied Shiraz has good tannin structure for ageing, the rich fruit concentration and balanced oak make it irresistibly approachable now. The 2021 vintage is drinking beautifully in its youth, showing primary fruit at its peak. You could certainly cellar it for 5-8 years to develop tertiary complexity, but the immediate pleasure factor is so high that most bottles won't make it to the cellar.

The rich, full-bodied nature and chocolate-plum flavours make this perfect for hearty red meat dishes like grilled lamb or beef with herb crusts. The wine's tannin structure can handle rich, fatty foods, while the fruit intensity complements barbecued meats beautifully. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese - the wine's opulence matches the intensity of strong cheeses without being overwhelmed.

Single vineyard wines come from grapes grown in one specific plot, allowing the unique characteristics of that particular site to shine through. This designation indicates superior fruit selection and terroir expression, as the winemaker has identified this vineyard block as exceptional enough to bottle separately. It typically means more concentrated flavours, distinct personality, and often represents the premium tier of a producer's range, justifying the 'treat yourself' positioning.
