Why do we love this wine?

This wine is proof that age matters, and we’re not just talking about what’s actually in the bottle. Grown on 120+ year-old vines in the sandy soils of Vine Vale, this is textbook Barossa power, dialled in with finesse. Expect a deep swirl of blackberry, black cherry and plum compote. Complex layers of spice, black liquorice, violets, chocolate bullets and a gorgeously earthy edge. It’s plush, generous and full-bodied, but kept fresh and structured with fine, powdery tannins and pristine natural acid. There’s a cassis intensity that builds and builds into a seriously long, satisfying finish. Rich, layered, and bursting with history - this is one you’ll want a few bottles of now, and a few tucked away until 2031.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz comes from 120+ year-old vines in Vine Vale's sandy soils, making them some of the oldest producing vines in the Barossa. Old vines like these naturally produce lower yields but dramatically more concentrated fruit, as their deep root systems access minerals and water sources that younger vines simply can't reach. The result is wine with exceptional complexity and intensity that reflects over a century of adaptation to this specific terroir.

While this 2021 Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its plush fruit and fine tannin structure, it's built for the long haul and will reward patience until 2031 or beyond. The combination of old vine concentration, natural acidity, and powdery tannins provides the backbone for extended ageing. During cellaring, expect the primary fruit flavours to integrate further with the spice and earthy elements, developing additional savoury complexity.

Certified organic viticulture often translates to more expressive terroir characteristics and cleaner fruit flavours, which you can taste in this wine's pristine natural acidity and earthy undertones. Organic farming practices encourage beneficial soil microorganisms and deeper root development, particularly important for these ancient vines. This approach allows the true character of the Vine Vale sandy soils and the Barossa's unique climate to shine through without synthetic interference.

The building cassis intensity comes from the perfect storm of old vine concentration, the 2021 vintage conditions, and Barossa's warm climate ripening the Shiraz to optimal phenolic maturity. Cassis notes in Shiraz typically develop when the grapes achieve full flavour ripeness while retaining natural acidity - exactly what these 120+ year-old vines deliver. The sandy soils of Vine Vale also contribute to this intensity by stressing the vines just enough to concentrate the fruit without compromising freshness.

This wine's rich, layered profile with chocolate, spice, and earthy elements makes it perfect for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb shoulder, aged beef steaks, or game meats. The fine, powdery tannins and natural acidity provide enough structure to cut through rich, fatty foods while the plum and blackberry fruit complements smoky barbecue flavours beautifully. Consider pairing with dishes that echo the wine's complexity - think moroccan tagines or hearty mushroom-based dishes that mirror its earthy characteristics.
