This is one of those wines that hits every nook and cranny of your palate. Intense but not overdone, bold yet elegant, and with the bones to go the distance in the cellar; 10-15 years at least. Masterful stuff.

Why do we love this wine?

The extended 2021 vintage was nothing short of a gift to South Australian winemakers, particularly those in McLaren Vale, and it shows here in a wine that’s full-bodied, cellar-worthy and brimming with complexity. Cooler conditions have dialled up the spice and nuance, delivering a imposing, yet graceful shiraz that’s as detailed as it is delicious. Think chocolate-dipped raspberries, vanilla bean and hints of that classic 'shiraz-y' smoked game note. The fruit is lush and mouth-filling, but there's a lifted vibrancy that keeps it agile. Raspberry jam, rose petal, star anise, cedar, liquorice; it’s all there, unfolding slowly with air. Richness and structure in equal measure. Dense fruit is backed up by layers of chewy, grainy tannins and just enough freshness to keep the finish long, dry and moreish.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2021 vintage was exceptional due to extended, cooler growing conditions that allowed for slower ripening and enhanced complexity. These conditions dialled up the natural spice and nuance that McLaren Vale is famous for, while maintaining the region's signature power and richness. The result is a wine that balances imposing structure with graceful elegance, showcasing both the terroir's strengths and the vintage's unique character.

This full-bodied Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential thanks to its dense fruit concentration and layers of chewy, grainy tannins that will soften over time. The wine's lifted vibrancy and structural backbone suggest it will develop beautifully over 8-12 years, with the chocolate and vanilla notes integrating further while secondary savoury characters emerge. The smoked game and liquorice elements will become more pronounced, adding complexity to the already impressive fruit profile.

The wine's rich, mouth-filling fruit and grainy tannins make it perfect for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb shoulder, grilled ribeye, or game meats that echo the wine's smoked character. The spice elements and star anise notes complement Middle Eastern or North African cuisine beautifully. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese, where the wine's freshness will cut through richness while the fruit complements the savoury intensity.

A 96-point rating from Wine Orbit places this Shiraz in exceptional territory, indicating outstanding quality and complexity that sets it apart from typical examples. This score, combined with the 5-star Halliday Winery rating, suggests the producer has achieved remarkable consistency and excellence. Such high ratings typically reflect wines that demonstrate perfect balance, distinctive character, and the ability to showcase both varietal typicity and regional expression at the highest level.

The oak treatment enhances rather than dominates the wine's natural Shiraz personality, contributing vanilla bean and cedar notes that frame the chocolate-dipped raspberry fruit beautifully. The oak provides structural support through subtle tannin integration while adding complexity layers that unfold slowly with air. This careful oak handling allows the wine's lifted vibrancy and spice characteristics to shine through, creating harmony between the fruit's natural power and the oak's supporting role.
