Broad, powerful, concentrated and dense. This is a big deal. The term 'Ancestor Vines' is reserved only for vineyards planted over 125 years ago. This places them as right up there with some of the oldest living shiraz vines in the entire world, and in this case, they absolutely live up to the hype.

Why do we love this wine?

As a general rule, the older the vines, the better the wines. But why? Well, the simplified answer is that as grape vines mature they begin to produce less fruit. As a result, all of the energy, all of the sun and soil, all of the flavour is condensed into less grapes, so you end up with highly concentrated, perfectly balanced fruit with the capacity to create extremely low quantity, extremely high quality wines that could out-last religion. This gorgeous wine is everything you'd expect from these world-famous vines and more. A complex bouquet of dark berries, cake spice, charcuterie and cedar lure in the lucky drinker and sets them up for a beautifully concentrated palate that feels both nuanced and assertive. And that's it, this wine imposes itself on any situation that it finds itself in, in the best possible way. Completely captivating.

Frequently Asked Questions

This exceptional rating reflects the wine's origin from old vines that naturally produce concentrated, low-yield fruit. The mature vines channel all their energy into fewer grapes, resulting in intensely flavoured berries that translate to remarkable complexity and balance in the bottle. Wine Orbit's 97-point score recognises this wine's ability to deliver both power and finesse - a hallmark of truly great Barossa Shiraz.

The Barossa Valley's warm continental climate and diverse soil types create perfect conditions for Shiraz to develop its signature rich, full-bodied character. The region's old vine heritage, some dating back over 150 years, provides genetic diversity and natural yield control that modern plantings simply cannot replicate. This terroir combination allows Shiraz to achieve the perfect balance of ripe fruit flavours, structured tannins, and age-worthy complexity that has made Barossa a global benchmark.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C to allow its complex aromatics of dark berries, spice, and cedar to fully express themselves. Decant for 30-60 minutes before serving to soften the tannins and integrate the oak elements. The wine's assertive character and concentrated palate make it perfect for rich dishes like grilled lamb, aged beef, or strong cheeses that can match its intensity without being overwhelmed.

The wine's natural affinity for charcuterie flavours makes it exceptional with cured meats, particularly salami, prosciutto, or aged chorizo. The cake spice elements pair beautifully with dishes featuring warm spices like cinnamon, cloves, or black pepper - think Moroccan tagines or spice-rubbed barbecue. Rich game meats like venison or duck also complement the wine's earthy complexity and full-bodied structure.

This cult producer's old vine Shiraz has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 15-20 years from vintage. The 2021 is drinking beautifully now but will continue developing complexity through 2030-2035, when the primary fruit will integrate fully with the oak and tertiary flavours will emerge. Store in a cool, dark place at consistent temperature - the wine's high quality fruit and balanced tannins ensure it will reward patient cellaring with increased depth and sophistication.
