Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This is McLaren Vale shiraz with its collar popped - cool, composed and quietly confident. Lavender, thyme and star anise on the nose, with plum, cocoa and liquorice flowing across a silky palate. Aged in French puncheons, it's all class. We're talking plush plum, dark cocoa and a gentle lick of liquorice. There’s spice from the oak, sure, but it never overshadows the fruit. It's graceful, finely tuned and self-assured - everything we love about McLaren Vale, right there in the glass. This one could age for as long as you patience lasts, but when it's drinking like this right now - you'll have a hard time leaving it alone...

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for Shiraz, allowing the grape to develop intense fruit concentration while retaining elegant structure. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, preventing over-ripeness and preserving the aromatic complexity you'll find in this wine's lavender and spice notes. This terroir produces Shiraz with the perfect balance of power and finesse that McLaren Vale is renowned for.

French puncheons are large oak barrels that provide gentle, subtle oak integration compared to smaller barrels, allowing the fruit to remain the star while adding complexity. The French oak contributes those elegant spice notes and helps develop the wine's silky texture without overwhelming the natural plum and cocoa flavors. This aging method creates a more refined, sophisticated wine that showcases both the fruit quality and the winemaker's restraint.

A 95-point score from Wine Orbit places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that represents the top tier of Australian wines. Wine Orbit is known for their rigorous tasting standards and focus on Australian and New Zealand wines, so this rating confirms the wine's remarkable balance, complexity, and aging potential. Such high scores are reserved for wines that demonstrate both immediate appeal and long-term cellaring prospects.

Quality McLaren Vale Shiraz from excellent vintages like 2021 typically develops beautifully over 10-15 years, with some exceptional examples aging gracefully for two decades or more. The wine's full-bodied structure, balanced acidity, and quality French oak aging provide the foundation for extended cellaring. As it ages, the primary fruit flavors will evolve into more complex secondary notes of leather, earth, and dried herbs while the tannins soften and integrate further.

This wine's rich plum and cocoa notes make it perfect for grilled red meats, particularly lamb with herbs that echo the wine's lavender and thyme aromatics. The full-bodied structure and spice elements also pair beautifully with aged cheeses, braised short ribs, or even dark chocolate desserts that complement the wine's cocoa undertones. The silky texture and balanced oak make it versatile enough for both casual barbecues and elegant dinner parties.
