Ancestor-vines dating back to 1890. All of that dense fruit, all of that concentration, going straight into the bottle. 96 points from both James Suckling AND Halliday (two of the harshest critics in the game) was enough to grab our interest. The first sip seized our complete attention.

Why do we love this wine?

Ancestor-vine shiraz doesn’t get much more compelling than this - sourced from the Lange family’s block perched beside the North Para River. And yes, the fruit’s got stories to tell. Rich, spicy and perfumed, it walks the line between power and poise like a seasoned pro. It opens with a seductive hit of dark cherry, dark plum and blackberry, backed by layers of cocoa, baking spice and Black Forest cake vibes for days. It’s generous, sure, but not overblown. Bright acidity and grainy, ripe tannins give it lift and structure. It’s impactful. It’s layered. And it’s got a very long road ahead if you can resist pulling the cork now. A seriously juicy old-vine Barossa that over-delivers in every way.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz comes from ancestor vines in the Lange family's single vineyard block beside the North Para River, meaning the vines are decades old and produce intensely concentrated fruit. Old vines develop deeper root systems that access unique soil minerals and naturally limit yields, creating wines with exceptional complexity and character that younger plantings simply can't match. The combination of this prime riverside location and ancient genetics delivers the kind of depth and storytelling that serious collectors seek.

While this Shiraz is already showing beautifully with its rich fruit and balanced structure, its 'very long road ahead' suggests 10-15 years of cellaring potential. The grainy, ripe tannins and bright acidity provide the backbone needed for extended ageing, during which the dark fruit will evolve into more complex secondary flavours like leather, tobacco, and earth. However, given its immediate appeal and generous nature, it's equally rewarding to drink now if you prefer vibrant, primary fruit character.

The wine's rich, spicy profile with cocoa and baking spice notes makes it perfect for hearty red meat dishes like slow-braised beef short ribs or grilled lamb with rosemary. The Black Forest cake characteristics also create surprising harmony with game meats like venison or duck, where the wine's dark fruit complements the meat's natural richness. For cheese lovers, pair it with aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar or Parmigiano-Reggiano to echo the wine's complex, layered personality.

The remarkable consistency of 95-96 point scores from respected critics like James Halliday, James Suckling, and Aaron Brasher indicates exceptional winemaking and terroir expression. When multiple independent critics align at this level, it typically signals a wine that perfectly captures its varietal character while showcasing unique site characteristics. The combination of old-vine fruit quality, skilled winemaking, and the outstanding 2021 vintage conditions in Barossa created a wine that ticks all the boxes for technical excellence and drinking pleasure.

Black Market Deals typically represent exceptional value wines that are offered at significantly reduced prices, often due to surplus stock, end-of-vintage clearances, or direct winery partnerships. Given this wine's 95-96 point ratings and old-vine Barossa pedigree, securing it as a Black Market Deal means you're getting premium quality at a fraction of the usual retail price. The 3-pack format also provides excellent value for money while giving you multiple bottles to enjoy over time or share with fellow wine enthusiasts.
