There’s nothing quite like the smell of new french oak. Except maybe when it’s mingling delightfully with the sweet aromatics of Barossan shiraz. Now that is what we call a classic pairing. And steak. Have this with steak.

Why do we love this wine?

This particular block is one that was planted by this family producer back in the mid 1900’s, in the famed town of Bethany. This vineyard produces deep, intricate wines and that’s before it even touches the winery. With some classy tricks and an infinite level of attention to detail, you’re guaranteed a super-powered, elegant wine that will knock your shoes and socks right off your feet. From one of the more ‘well travelled’ winemakers, with experience working all over the world - it was his home town of Barossa that he was drawn to in the end. The generational family story growing wine grapes in the region carries into today, when a tight-nit group of growers create wines unique, and of impeccable quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine comes from old vines planted in the mid-1900s in Bethany, one of Barossa's most prestigious sub-regions known for producing concentrated, age-worthy Shiraz. The combination of generational family knowledge, old vine fruit intensity, and a world-travelled winemaker's expertise creates a wine with exceptional depth and complexity. The 95-point Wine Orbit rating reflects the superior quality that comes from this unique terroir and meticulous winemaking approach.

The black cherry provides the primary fruit backbone typical of premium Barossa Shiraz, while the tobacco notes add earthy complexity that develops from both the old vine character and careful oak integration. Vanilla flavours emerge from quality barrel aging, which complements rather than masks the fruit, creating a harmonious balance between power and elegance. This flavour profile is classic for full-bodied Barossa Shiraz and indicates excellent winemaking technique.

While this full-bodied Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its rich fruit expression and integrated oak, it has excellent cellaring potential due to the old vine fruit concentration and structured tannins. Barossa Shiraz from quality producers typically peaks between 5-15 years, so this 2021 vintage should continue developing complexity through the late 2020s and into the 2030s. The high critic scores suggest it has the balance and structure for extended aging.

The full-bodied nature and rich flavour profile make this wine perfect for robust dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked game meats where the wine's intensity won't be overwhelmed. The tobacco and vanilla notes complement barbecued meats beautifully, while the black cherry fruit can handle rich sauces and aged cheeses. Consider pairing with dishes that incorporate similar earthy elements like mushrooms or herbs to echo the wine's complexity.

The consistent high scores from respected critics like Wine Orbit (95 points) and James Halliday (94 points) indicate exceptional quality across multiple evaluation criteria including structure, complexity, and aging potential. These ratings place this wine in the top tier of Australian Shiraz, suggesting it represents outstanding value for a premium Barossa wine. The 'Old Vine' designation further confirms the quality fruit source that enables such high-scoring wines.
