Why do we love this wine?

Rich, ripe and smoother than a Barry White song. This wine's been seriously cared for, hand picked, cold soaked before fermentation, to build complexity in the fruit, then aged in oak for 18-24 months, again, complexity. A cleverly crafted wine that balances all out attack and subtle beauty in a masterful fashion. Dark cherries and plums with chocolatey oak notes and a hint of allspice, this wine taste exactly how you'd expect a premium Barossa wine to taste and can really hold its own against some of the real heavy-hitters of the region. Yes, this is a wine the looks fantastic but, as with most things, it's what's on the inside of the bottle that counts.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz demonstrates exceptional winemaking through cold soaking before fermentation and extended 18-24 month oak ageing, techniques that build layers of complexity beyond typical regional offerings. The combination of hand-picking and careful temperature control during processing preserves the fruit's natural character while allowing the oak integration to develop harmoniously. With 96 points from Wine Orbit and recognition from Ray Jordan, it competes directly with the Barossa's most prestigious labels at a fraction of their price.

Given the extended oak maturation and full-bodied structure, this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now but has excellent cellaring potential for 8-12 years. The cold soaking process and careful fruit selection create a wine with sufficient tannin backbone and acidity to develop gracefully, while the chocolatey oak notes will integrate further with time. Barossa Shiraz from quality vintages like 2021 often hit their peak around 7-10 years, when the fruit and oak achieve perfect harmony.

The rich plum and dark cherry flavours, combined with chocolatey oak and allspice notes, make this Shiraz perfect for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb, beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses. The wine's full-bodied nature and extended oak ageing can handle bold flavours and rich sauces, particularly those with earthy or smoky elements. Consider pairing with barbecued meats, mushroom-based dishes, or even dark chocolate desserts to complement the wine's complex flavour profile.

Black Market Deals typically feature premium wines from established producers who prefer to move stock discreetly without affecting their regular pricing structure. This allows wine lovers to access seriously high-quality Barossa Shiraz - evidenced by the 96-point rating and five-star winery status - at prices well below what you'd expect for this calibre of wine. The anonymous nature protects the producer's brand positioning while giving consumers exceptional value on wines that have received critical acclaim.

Cold soaking involves macerating the grape skins with juice at low temperatures before fermentation begins, extracting colour, tannins, and flavour compounds more gently than traditional methods. This technique enhances the wine's complexity by drawing out subtle fruit characters and aromatics that might be lost in a hot fermentation, contributing to the wine's described balance between 'all out attack and subtle beauty'. The process is particularly beneficial for premium Shiraz, helping to integrate the dark cherry and plum flavours while maintaining the wine's elegant structure despite its full-bodied nature.
