Why do we love this wine?

Spoilt for choice of old vine shiraz, this producer captures the intensity of their vineyards in true style. They've built a reputation for wines that are true to McLaren Vale, and the generations of craft that have been invested into the region. There’s deeply bound notes of spicy, chocolatey french oak that complements the pure line of blackcurrant, bramble and licorice. Standing tall now, we can’t wait to see where this will be in many years time.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for shiraz, producing wines with exceptional concentration and complexity. This region is renowned for its old vine shiraz that develops intense fruit flavours while maintaining elegant structure. The combination of warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby coast allows for extended ripening periods, resulting in the deep blackcurrant and bramble characteristics found in this wine.

The French oak barrels used in this wine's maturation contribute sophisticated spicy and chocolatey notes that complement rather than overpower the fruit. French oak is prized for its tight grain structure, which allows for slower, more controlled extraction of tannins and flavour compounds. This creates the 'deeply bound' integration mentioned, where the oak becomes seamlessly woven into the wine's fabric rather than sitting as a separate element.

A 96-point score from Wine Orbit indicates this is an exceptional wine of outstanding quality and complexity. Wine Orbit uses a rigorous 100-point scale where scores above 95 are reserved for wines showing remarkable character, perfect balance, and significant ageing potential. This rating suggests the wine demonstrates textbook McLaren Vale shiraz characteristics while offering something truly special that sets it apart from its peers.

This full-bodied shiraz has the structure and concentration to evolve beautifully over the next 10-15 years. The high-quality French oak and intense fruit concentration will gradually integrate further, while the tannins soften and secondary flavours like leather, tobacco, and earthy complexity emerge. The wine's current blackcurrant and chocolate notes will develop into more nuanced flavours, making it even more rewarding for patient cellaring.

This rich, full-bodied shiraz with its chocolate and spice notes pairs magnificently with robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb, aged beef steaks, or game meats. The wine's minerality and structured tannins also complement hard cheeses and charcuterie beautifully. For vegetarian options, try it with mushroom-based dishes or grilled eggplant with herbs, as these earthy flavours echo the wine's complex profile.
