There's a reason this has become THE mofo fave shiraz: it’s powerful and opulent, but maintains a certain grace that keeps everything in balance. It doesn't get much better.

Why do we love this wine?

A monster Shiraz that typifies Australian drinking. This is the style of vino that made the world take notice of this ripper region. This Barossa shiraz speaks of the powerful Barossa terroir and the master crafter who made it (can you say, ex-head winemaker at Yalumba?) There’s no surprises here with the flavour profile; an expression of blackberry, plum, chocolate, spices and cedar from the use of 30% new French oak. After four years cellaring time, it’s drinking beautifully now, but has another decade of prime left in it for those patient types.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the legendary Barossa terroir through the expertise of an ex-head winemaker from Yalumba, one of Australia's most respected producers. The combination of old vine fruit, single vineyard sourcing, and careful use of 30% new French oak creates a wine that exemplifies why Barossa Shiraz put Australian wine on the world map. Its exceptional ratings, including 96 points from Ray Jordan, reflect the region's ability to produce world-class wines that balance power with finesse.

After already benefiting from four years of careful cellaring, this wine is drinking beautifully now but has another decade of prime drinking ahead. Barossa Shiraz from quality producers like this typically develops greater complexity over 10-15 years, with the tannins softening and secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and earth emerging. The wine's full-bodied structure and quality oak treatment provide the backbone needed for extended ageing.

This powerful Barossa Shiraz demands equally robust flavours - think char-grilled steaks, slow-cooked lamb shanks, or rich game meats like venison. The wine's mocha and spice notes complement barbecued meats beautifully, while its blackberry and plum characteristics pair wonderfully with dark chocolate desserts. The French oak influence also makes it an excellent match for aged hard cheeses and charcuterie boards.

Old vine designation typically refers to grapevines that are 35+ years old, though in Barossa some vineyards date back over a century. These mature vines produce smaller yields of more concentrated fruit, resulting in wines with greater depth, complexity, and mineral expression. The deep root systems of old vines access different soil layers, contributing to the wine's distinctive terroir expression and the intense flavour profile you'll find in this exceptional Shiraz.

The 30% new French oak adds structure and complexity without overwhelming the fruit, contributing the cedar and spice notes that complement the natural blackberry and plum flavours. French oak is prized for its tight grain and subtle influence, allowing the Barossa terroir to shine while adding vanilla, toast, and tannin backbone. This careful oak integration is what separates premium Barossa Shiraz from mass-produced alternatives, creating a wine that balances power with elegance.
