This is Reserve shiraz, only made in the best years and in tiny quantities. You’ll find layers of dark fruit - plum, blackberry and cherry compote - with spice, dark chocolate, earthy notes and a savoury edge that speaks to both the old vines and McLaren Vale itself. It’s full-bodied but not clumsy, plush but structured, with tannins that are firm yet polished. The finish is long and layered, the kind that makes you pause before you even think about the next sip and just take a moment to enjoy yourself.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Some of the fruit here comes off a McLaren Vale vineyard planted back in 1910 - gnarly old bush vines that have been tended by three generations of the same family. It’s a patch of dirt with deep clay soils, east-west rows to shield the fruit from the harsh summer sun, and roots that stretch forever thanks to access to good water. Translation? Vines that dig deep and deliver concentration, balance and serious power. This wine has helped put this producer firmly on the map - you'll know what we men as soon as you see the label. It’s approachable enough to drink young if you can’t wait, but built for the cellar if you’ve got patience. Either way, it’s a reserve-level shiraz with history in its bones and proof in the pudding.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz draws fruit from century-old bush vines planted in 1910, representing some of McLaren Vale's most prized viticultural heritage. These gnarly old vines have developed extensive root systems that tap into deep clay soils and reliable water sources, allowing them to produce intensely concentrated fruit even in challenging vintages. The east-west row orientation protects the grapes from harsh afternoon sun, helping maintain natural acidity while achieving full phenolic ripeness.

The 2020 vintage in McLaren Vale was marked by moderate temperatures and well-timed rainfall, creating ideal conditions for old vine Shiraz to express both power and elegance. This vintage allowed the century-old vines to fully showcase their ability to balance concentration with freshness, resulting in a wine that's approachable in youth yet structured for long-term cellaring. The combination of vintage conditions and vine age has produced a Shiraz with exceptional depth and complexity.

This reserve-level Shiraz's blackberry and leather notes make it perfect for rich, savoury dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-braised beef short ribs, grilled lamb with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The wine's full body and tannin structure also complement barbecued meats beautifully, while its underlying elegance means it won't overpower dishes with earthy elements like mushroom risotto or game meats.

While approachable now for those who enjoy youthful fruit intensity, this Shiraz is built for extended cellaring thanks to its old vine concentration and reserve-level structure. The tannins and acidity suggest it will continue developing complexity for 10-15 years, with the leather notes likely to evolve into more nuanced tertiary flavours. Store it in a cool, dark place and expect the wine to show increasing sophistication and integration over the next decade.

The 97-point Wine Orbit score and Five Star rating indicate this Shiraz represents exceptional quality within McLaren Vale's premium tier. These ratings reflect the wine's successful marriage of old vine intensity with elegant winemaking, showcasing why this producer has gained recognition in the region. The strong Vivino community rating across all vintages suggests consistent quality and broad appeal, making this a reliable choice for both collectors and everyday wine lovers.
