This terrific McLaren Vale shiraz has been winning hearts and awards for over two decades, after just one sip, you start to understand why. Lovely generosity and texture, this one's all about plum, aniseed and rich fruit-cake flavours with spicy oak and light lingering tannin woven into the framework somewhere. This is just delicious. Best word for it.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Rich, powerful aromatics of blackberries, toast and other ripe black fruit lead to a beautifully balanced palate - fresh rich fruit with soft tannins and a long, dry finish that has us begging for one more sip. Lashings of bright plums, raspberries, blackberry and black cherry get the creamy vanilla oak treatment, while fine-grained tannins provide a healthy structure. But here's the magic: that warm, round, luscious ball of flavour in the mid-palate - it's this wine's signature move. This one would benefit from a good decant upon opening. It's certainly suitable for mid-term cellaring. Those earthy textural tannins are firm now but will soften and become elegant with age.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for Shiraz to develop the intense fruit concentration and complexity found in this wine. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby Gulf St Vincent help preserve acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness. This terroir contributes to the wine's signature mid-palate richness and the seamless integration of fruit, oak, and tannins that McLaren Vale Shiraz is renowned for.

Given the wine's full-bodied structure and firm tannins, decanting for 1-2 hours will significantly enhance your drinking experience. The decanting process allows the wine to breathe, softening those earthy textural tannins and helping the vanilla oak integrate more harmoniously with the fruit. This aeration will also help the blackberry and plum flavors open up, revealing the wine's complex aromatic profile more fully.

This Shiraz shows excellent aging potential thanks to its firm tannin structure and balanced acidity from the exceptional 2020 vintage. The wine can be enjoyed now with proper decanting, but will reward patience over the next 8-12 years as those textural tannins soften and integrate. During cellaring, expect the primary fruit flavors to evolve into more complex secondary notes while maintaining the wine's signature mid-palate richness.

The wine's rich blackberry and plum fruit, combined with vanilla oak and chocolate notes, pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, especially lamb with rosemary or beef with peppercorn sauce. The full-bodied structure and spice elements also make it excellent with aged cheeses, mushroom-based dishes, or even dark chocolate desserts. The wine's balanced tannins won't overpower food, while its fruit intensity can stand up to bold, flavorful preparations.

A 90-point rating from a boutique producer indicates exceptional quality and craftsmanship, representing wine that delivers outstanding character and complexity. Boutique producers often have more flexibility to focus on small-batch, premium fruit selection and hands-on winemaking techniques. This rating, combined with the 'Killer Vintage' designation, suggests the 2020 growing season produced fruit of exceptional quality, resulting in a wine that showcases both the producer's skill and the vintage's potential.
