This wine has a certain air of stoic elegance that's hard to put your finger on. There's something awe-inspiring in the way that such a harsh environment, as the Barossa is, can produce something of such refinement and beauty. Poeticisms aside, this wine is truly delicious and ticks every conceivable box that Barossa shiraz-heads are looking for.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Dark, dense berries and savoury elements of cedar and black olive initially leap out at the drinker but a subtle, yet firm, core of French oak brings a complex structure and hints of sweet vanilla to the palate, building a lengthy, satisfying finish. The winemakers haven't tried to re-write the book on Barossa shiraz here. Why would they? They've simply scribbled a couple of notes in the margins, so-to-speak. Super-fine and subtly firm tannins on the finish round out the drinking experience and make it veeeeeeery difficult to stop at one glass. To carry on with the book analogy - this one's a real page-turner.

Frequently Asked Questions

While staying true to classic Barossa shiraz traditions, this wine adds subtle refinements through careful French oak integration and old vine fruit selection. The winemakers have enhanced the natural dark berry intensity with cedar and black olive complexity, creating a more nuanced expression than many commercial Barossa shiraz wines. The result is a wine that honours regional character while offering sophisticated layers that unfold with each sip.

Old vines produce smaller yields of more concentrated fruit, which translates directly into this wine's impressive depth and complexity. These mature vines have developed extensive root systems that access deeper soil layers, contributing to the wine's mineral backbone and the savoury elements like cedar and black olive. The natural concentration from old vines also supports the wine's full-bodied structure and lengthy finish without requiring heavy-handed winemaking techniques.

The wine's rich dark fruit flavours and savoury cedar notes make it ideal for grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with black pepper crusts. The black olive characteristics complement Mediterranean dishes like ratatouille or herb-crusted roasts, while the French oak vanilla hints pair beautifully with aged cheeses. The wine's firm tannin structure can handle rich, fatty dishes and will soften beautifully alongside slow-cooked braises or barbecued meats.

This wine is drinking beautifully now but has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 8-12 years. The French oak integration and firm tannins suggest it will continue evolving, with the dark fruit flavours gradually developing more tertiary characteristics like leather and earth. For optimal enjoyment, consider drinking some bottles now to appreciate the vibrant fruit, while cellaring others to experience how the savoury elements and oak integration mature over time.

A 95-point rating from Wine Orbit places this shiraz in exceptional company, indicating outstanding quality that significantly exceeds typical commercial examples. This score reflects the wine's successful balance of power and finesse, particularly impressive for a boutique producer working with single vineyard fruit. Such high ratings often indicate wines that offer exceptional value relative to their quality level, especially when combined with old vine fruit and careful winemaking techniques that create memorable drinking experiences.
