Why do we love this wine?

It's not so often that a cool-climate shiraz breaks through the BS and claws its way to national (and international) recognition, particularly at this price. Our point is, for this wine to be so widely known and adored can only mean that it's something pretty special. Red plums and violets on the nose, dark fruit, black pepper and soft tannins on the silky, lengthy palate. For this price, you are absolutely laughing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cool-climate Shiraz like this Victorian example tends to be more elegant and restrained compared to the bold, jammy styles from warmer regions like the Barossa Valley. The cooler growing conditions preserve natural acidity and allow for more complex flavour development, resulting in the violet aromatics and silky texture described here. This style showcases Shiraz's ability to express terroir rather than just power, which explains why it has gained such widespread recognition despite being from a less traditional Shiraz region.

The combination of fruitcake and raspberry flavours reflects Shiraz's remarkable flavour complexity and the wine's full-bodied structure. The raspberry notes likely come from the primary fruit character, while the fruitcake flavours develop through winemaking techniques like oak aging and possibly some whole bunch fermentation. This duality is classic cool-climate Shiraz - fresh red fruit balanced by deeper, spiced characteristics that emerge as the wine opens up in the glass.

James Halliday's Top 100 Producer listing is one of Australia's most prestigious wine industry accolades, recognising wineries that consistently produce exceptional wines across their range. For a producer to achieve this status means they've demonstrated technical excellence, consistency, and innovation over multiple vintages. The fact this wine comes from such a recognised producer at this price point represents exceptional value, as you're getting the quality standards of a top-tier winery without the premium pricing.

Serve this Shiraz at cellar temperature (16-18°C) in large bowled glasses to allow the violet aromatics and complex flavours to fully express themselves. The wine's silky tannins and lengthy palate make it perfect for pairing with rich dishes like braised lamb, aged cheeses, or even dark chocolate desserts. Given its full-bodied nature and soft tannin structure, it's drinking beautifully now but could also benefit from decanting for 30-60 minutes to fully open up.

The 2020 vintage is drinking superbly now, showing the perfect balance between youthful fruit vibrancy and developed complexity that makes great Shiraz so appealing. While the soft tannins and silky palate suggest it's at a beautiful drinking stage, quality cool-climate Shiraz like this can often improve for 5-8 years with proper cellaring. The choice depends on your preference - enjoy the fresh violet and plum characters now, or cellar for more developed secondary flavours to emerge.
