I'm keen to not bury the lead on this one, so here goes: this is matured in 50% new French oak for 20 months. Lovers of luxury, eat your heart out.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This strikes the fresh jam cord perfectly (and it's a hard chord to play); the trick is to find developed fruit flavours without falling into overly unctuous and too-ripe territory. When winemakers get it right the results are outstanding - lucky for you, this is one such wine. Spiced, herbacious, and delivering a long fantail finish that ties the wine neatly together and has you (almost unconsciously) lifting the glass back to your lips. I will tell you to cellar this (and you will be rewarded if you do) but it's hypocritical of me, because I've already consumed my modest allocation.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine achieves the difficult balance of delivering rich, developed fruit flavours without becoming overly heavy or jammy - a common pitfall for full-bodied Shiraz. The Barossa Valley's unique terroir, combined with old vine fruit, creates exceptional concentration while maintaining freshness. The spiced and herbaceous elements add complexity that elevates it beyond typical fruit-forward styles, earning it dual 97-point ratings from respected critics.

While this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its immediate appeal and long finish, it has excellent cellaring potential thanks to its full-bodied structure and old vine concentration. Barossa Shiraz from quality producers typically peaks between 8-15 years, so this 2020 vintage should continue developing complexity through the late 2020s and into the 2030s. The wine's balanced tannin structure and acidity will support graceful ageing.

The rich blackberry and dark chocolate notes, combined with oaky influences, make this perfect for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb, beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses. The herbaceous qualities also complement Mediterranean herbs in dishes like rosemary-crusted meats or ratatouille. The wine's full body and spiced character can handle bold flavours and rich sauces that might overwhelm lighter reds.

Old vines, typically 30+ years old, produce smaller yields of more concentrated fruit with deeper root systems that access different soil layers. This results in more complex flavour development and better natural balance between fruit intensity and structural elements. In the Barossa Valley, old vine Shiraz is particularly prized because the vines have adapted to the climate over decades, producing fruit with distinctive regional character and exceptional aging potential.

The 'fresh jam' descriptor refers to concentrated fruit flavours that retain brightness and vibrancy rather than becoming stewed or overripe. It's a delicate balance where the wine shows rich berry intensity reminiscent of quality preserves, but maintains acidity and freshness that keeps it lively on the palate. This characteristic is highly sought after in premium Shiraz, as it indicates optimal ripeness and skilled winemaking that preserves the fruit's natural vitality.
