We love our bread, we love our butter. But most of all, we love an estate shiraz from a Barossa icon winery. This is classic Barossa Shiraz, absolutely delicious.

Why do we love this wine?

Whenever I visit a cellar door, or a tasting, or just picking pieces from the inventory of any producer- you always have to look at their middle-tier wine. That's how you separate the good producers from the exceptional ones: by the calibre and attention they pay at every level. This is spot-on for this producer, brimming with chocolate and boysenberry richness, coupled with plenty of black pepper and clove spice. This is shiraz, stripped back, unfussy, pure and simple. What a delight.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine exemplifies the exceptional attention to detail that separates great producers from good ones, particularly in their middle-tier offerings. The Barossa Valley's warm climate and ancient soils contribute to the wine's concentrated chocolate and boysenberry flavours, while the region's signature black pepper and clove spice notes showcase the terroir's distinctive character. It's a testament to how premium winemaking techniques can create remarkable value at accessible price points.

The 2020 vintage in Barossa was characterised by excellent growing conditions that allowed for optimal flavour concentration without excessive alcohol levels. This vintage timing means the wine has had sufficient bottle age to integrate its tannins while retaining vibrant fruit character. The herbaceous notes alongside the rich blackberry and plum flavours suggest perfect ripeness was achieved, creating a wine that's drinking beautifully now but has the structure for further cellaring.

The wine's rich chocolate and boysenberry notes make it an ideal match for grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with pepper crusts that echo the wine's spice profile. The black pepper and clove characteristics also complement game meats, aged cheeses, and hearty stews. For vegetarian options, try it with mushroom-based dishes or grilled eggplant, where the wine's full body won't be overwhelmed by lighter flavours.

This Shiraz is drinking beautifully now, with its tannins well-integrated and fruit flavours at their peak expression. However, quality Barossa Shiraz typically has excellent cellaring potential due to the region's structured winemaking approach. You can enjoy it immediately for its vibrant fruit character, or cellar it for 5-8 years to develop more complex secondary flavours like leather, tobacco, and dried herbs that complement the existing spice notes.

This description indicates the winemaker has focused on expressing the natural character of Barossa Shiraz without over-manipulation or excessive oak treatment. The wine showcases the grape's inherent qualities - rich fruit, natural spice, and regional terroir - rather than masking them with heavy-handed winemaking techniques. This approach often results in wines that are more food-friendly and age gracefully, as the fundamental fruit and structure remain the stars of the show.
