We love our bread, we love our butter. But most of all, we love an estate shiraz from a Barossa icon winery. This is classic Barossa Shiraz, absolutely delicious.

Why do we love this wine?

Whenever I visit a cellar door, or a tasting, or just picking pieces from the inventory of any producer- you always have to look at their middle-tier wine. That's how you separate the good producers from the exceptional ones: by the calibre and attention they pay at every level. This is spot-on for this producer, brimming with chocolate and boysenberry richness, coupled with plenty of black pepper and clove spice. This is shiraz, stripped back, unfussy, pure and simple. What a delight.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This 2020 Shiraz exemplifies the Barossa Valley's reputation for producing world-class Shiraz with exceptional depth and character. The wine showcases the region's warm climate through its rich chocolate and boysenberry flavours, while the distinctive black pepper and clove spice reflect the terroir that makes Barossa Shiraz globally recognised. It represents the producer's commitment to quality across their entire range, not just their premium bottlings.

The full-bodied palate weight means this Shiraz delivers substantial texture and intensity on the palate, creating a satisfying mouthfeel that coats your taste buds. This weight comes from concentrated fruit flavours, tannin structure, and likely higher alcohol content typical of warm-climate Australian Shiraz. The richness makes it perfect for hearty dishes and ensures the wine can develop beautifully over the next 5-8 years.

The chocolate and boysenberry richness, combined with black pepper and clove spice, makes this Shiraz ideal for robust, flavourful dishes. Think grilled lamb with rosemary, beef brisket with smoky barbecue sauce, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The wine's spice profile also complements Middle Eastern cuisine, particularly dishes with cumin, coriander, and paprika.

This 2020 Shiraz is drinking beautifully now, showing the vibrant fruit and spice characteristics that make it so appealing. However, being a full-bodied Barossa Shiraz with good structure, it has excellent cellaring potential for 8-12 years. The blackberry and plum flavours will evolve into more complex secondary characters like leather and tobacco, while the tannins will soften and integrate further.

This description suggests the winemaker has focused on expressing the natural character of Barossa Shiraz without over-manipulation or excessive oak treatment. The wine likely showcases clean, direct fruit flavours and regional spice characteristics without being masked by heavy-handed winemaking techniques. This approach allows the inherent quality of the fruit and terroir to shine through, creating an authentic representation of what great Barossa Shiraz should taste like.
