This is Reserve shiraz, only made in the best years and in tiny quantities. You’ll find layers of dark fruit - plum, blackberry and cherry compote - with spice, dark chocolate, earthy notes and a savoury edge that speaks to both the old vines and McLaren Vale itself. It’s full-bodied but not clumsy, plush but structured, with tannins that are firm yet polished. The finish is long and layered, the kind that makes you pause before you even think about the next sip and just take a moment to enjoy yourself.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Some of the fruit here comes off a McLaren Vale vineyard planted back in 1910 - gnarly old bush vines that have been tended by three generations of the same family. It’s a patch of dirt with deep clay soils, east-west rows to shield the fruit from the harsh summer sun, and roots that stretch forever thanks to access to good water. Translation? Vines that dig deep and deliver concentration, balance and serious power. This wine has helped put this producer firmly on the map - you'll know what we men as soon as you see the label. It’s approachable enough to drink young if you can’t wait, but built for the cellar if you’ve got patience. Either way, it’s a reserve-level shiraz with history in its bones and proof in the pudding.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz comes from century-old bush vines planted in 1910 in McLaren Vale, tended by three generations of the same family. The deep clay soils and strategic east-west row orientation protect the fruit from harsh summer sun, while the ancient root systems access deep water sources. These old vines naturally restrict yields, concentrating flavours and creating the backbone for this reserve-level wine that balances power with elegance.

The 2019 vintage offers excellent flexibility - it's approachable now for those who enjoy youthful fruit intensity, but the wine's structure and concentration from those old vines means it will reward cellaring. McLaren Vale Shiraz from this calibre typically peaks between 8-15 years, so you could cellar it until the late 2020s or early 2030s. The choice depends on whether you prefer vibrant fruit-forward character or the complex tertiary flavours that develop with age.

The rich, meaty character with chocolate and plum notes makes this Shiraz perfect for hearty dishes like slow-cooked lamb, beef brisket, or aged steaks. The wine's full body and concentration can stand up to bold flavours like barbecued meats with smoky marinades or rich game dishes. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese, where the wine's fruit sweetness balances the saltiness beautifully.

The 96-point Wine Orbit rating and Five Star recognition reflect the exceptional quality achieved from those 110-year-old vines and meticulous winemaking. Critics often reward wines that express their terroir authentically, and this Shiraz delivers classic McLaren Vale characteristics - rich fruit, balanced tannins, and remarkable concentration. The combination of old vine intensity, optimal vintage conditions in 2019, and skilled winemaking has created a wine that punches well above its weight class.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for Shiraz, producing wines known for their rich fruit character and spicy complexity. The deep clay soils mentioned here retain moisture during dry periods while providing excellent drainage, allowing the old vines to develop concentrated flavours without stress. This terroir typically produces Shiraz with distinctive chocolate and plum notes, exactly what you'll find in this bottle, along with the region's signature balance of power and elegance.
